For most jobs you are required to be aged 16 or over. If you are looking for summer jobs during the school holidays or work to compliment modelling opportunities there are many job types that 15 and 14 year olds can do to earn money before your sixteenth birthday. Take a look at the types of jobs available and what to expect.

Would you like to become a teen model? We can help, simply register with us today!

Jobs for 15 Year Olds in the UK

Young people are able to take on a paper round, be a kitchen porter, dog walker or babysit for family friends. The latter is more lucrative and can be easy to take on during term time.

Make sure that you are paid fairly as many try to exploit teens and pay below the national minimum wage. This is due to the fact that 15 year olds are not actually entitled to the national minimum wage. Therefore, you have to negotiate with your employer for a fair amount. Those aged between 16-17 are entitled to at least £4.20. This is a figure that you could start your negotiations with. You need to have realistic salary expectations for your age yet not be taken advantage of also.

Approach your local newsagents to see if they have a paper round available. Alternatively, ask your family friends if they need someone reliable to look after their kids or walk their dogs. Of course, if you offer dog walking services you must be a lover of animals.

Work experience is very valuable and can help in many aspects of your life. Voluntary work is also beneficial when it comes to finding part time work for 16 year olds. You will already have work experience that other young workers don’t have. Local businesses will value a conscientious, hard working young person who has took time to do some voluntary work.

Working Around School Commitments

There are also laws on how many hours a week you can work. So make sure you do not over do it. 15 year olds can work up to 2 hours on a school day and a Sunday. Saturdays are slightly different and you can work up to 8 hours. However, during school holidays you can complete up to 8 hours of work each day accept Sunday, which remains at only 2 hours.

Make sure that you are receiving regular breaks throughout the day. Also, it is important to start and finish at appropriate times. 15 year olds should never start before 7am or finish after 7pm by law or work during school hours.

Baby-sitting is a job that can easily be planned around modelling opportunities and school. You will most likely be asked at weekend evenings. This bit of pocket money can be saved and put towards your portfolio to show your parents you are serious about the job opportunities. Those under school leaving age are restricted by law yet can take on some jobs in retail and catering industries. The best way is to ask first before applying what their minimum age is.

Jobs for 15 year olds UK is a search that a teenage model will perform to uncover the types of job roles available for their age range. At the age of 15, an individual is classed as a teen model until they reach over 17. Therefore, parent’s consent and a teen model agency are essential in forming a successful career and securing exciting job roles. Without these two parties models of this age range would find the task of breaking into the modelling industry extremely difficult. A simple ‘jobs for 15 year olds’ search will not suffice.

List of Model Jobs for 15 Year Olds

Brands such as New Look, H&M and Marks & Spencer all require campaign images to showcase their designs for advertising in and out of store. Teen models have a big part to play in promoting brands and their products.

  • Campaign shots – every store organises ads to promote their new season campaign.
  • Product imagery – each brand has a website that includes simple images to showcase the fit of the design.
  • Catalogue work – catalogues also use product shots to showcase clothing. With the large amount of products available teens may be asked to pose using a technical gadget for example.
  • Fashion shows – shopping malls use teens in their event to showcase their designs suited to their age range. Top fashion designers also include teens in their shows.
  • TV commercials – brands use commercials to promote their designs to a larger audience.

Teenage Model Agencies

Those employed to organise shots for the teenage department will turn to trusted modelling agencies who specialise in this age range; choosing organisations that have been recommended or used previously forming a strong bond.

The agents will note down the specifications that the brand desires and search through their teenage model database to source individuals that fit the description. The chosen selection will be contacted to meet the organisers and establish availability. Teen models will attend a casting where the preferred models are chosen to attend the shoot. With this lengthy process in mind it is essential to be signed to a reputable agency that will provide opportunities via their links and connections within the industry. Also, make sure that you discuss pay and expenses before signing the contract. You may end up with very little money otherwise as there are many who exploit teens in the industry.

London is the hub of the modelling industry and where most agencies and brands are located. If you don’t live near London expect a long commute or an overnight stay to get to castings and job opportunities. As the modelling world is constantly on the move, new jobs present themselves very regularly. Living in Wales, Scotland or other English cities could present a problem as you have your school timetable to consider. Your parents and the local council need to be on board if you take a day off to model.

how-to-find-jobs-for-15-year-olds

Where to Find Modelling Opportunities

Some smaller, independent jobs for local fashion shows or brands may advertise for a teen model on free sites such as Indeed or Gumtree. If you choose to investigate further it is essential that you remain safe at all times. Do not meet up with a stranger without knowing exactly who they work for and if they are legit. Ask as many questions as possible to find out more, check their website to truly see whether the facts match up and ask for a second opinion.

Always take a friend or family member with you for safety reasons and meet in a public place such as a cafe where there are others around. Let adults know where you are meeting so many people know of your whereabouts without alarming them. These useful sites can offer opportunities that are legit yet it is necessary to act with caution to ensure safety.

Do not overwork yourself with super long days as exhaustion is a reality that can be really serious. A recent case of a teen working abroad tragically died due to extra long hours. Her young age left her scared to go to hospital in a foreign country not speaking the language or having medical insurance. Always make sure your parent is with you to take care of you on each job opportunity. They provide a voice to an inexperienced, naïve teen who do not know the ways of the world yet.

Modelling Jobs to Avoid

Avoid modelling jobs that do not ask your age or for permission from your parents. At the age of 15, you may feel mature and wise enough to make your own decisions yet the experience of your parents wiser years will be useful. In comparison to industry experts and your parents life experience your young years may make you naive and innocent. It is normal to want to make your career choices yet the boundaries are put in place for a reason.

Teenagers are still experiencing life and need older individuals to guide and give permission to keep hopeful adolescents safe. The excitement and desperation to make it as a model may outshine reality. Therefore, having an adult making rational decisions is a blessing. Do not except jobs via social media as no matter how fascinating and exciting they seem it is usually a predator using the wrong methods to find innocent teens. Trustworthy agencies and brands will not use social media platforms to connect with young individuals.

Agencies Find Models on Instagram

Agents are able to look at the stream of photographs to decide if they are suitable for their agency. A carefully curated Instagram feed with a huge following will not only attract agencies but maybe brands too.

Think about it. If your grid is hugely popular with a dedicated fan base fashion and beauty labels will be interested in a collaboration. Therefore, the idea is for you to post shots from the campaigns that you feature in to your profile. Since it is proven that those who follow you will buy into the product also. It seems like a win win situation yet you must be careful.

Charles Levi’s Rise to Fame

17 year old, Charles Levi, was offered a modelling contract after being spotted by photographers and an agent on Instagram a year ago. His selfies ‘taken out of pure boredom’ secured him a contract with Chadwick modelling agency.

Charles claims: ‘I would never have thought my mechanism of social networking with friends would become the tool that got me signed to my agency. But I guess things are changing as technology evolves. In contrast to other big models like Kate Moss who got found at an airport, you can really put yourself out there with social media nowadays.’

After the results of a photoshoot with Sydney photographer Richard Sawyer was uploaded to his Instagram account, Jaime McHugh from Chadwick Modelling agency commented “Hey Charles, you’ve got a great look, send me an email at ……. if you’re interested in modelling!” Since following up on the comment, Charles has appeared in four photoshoots including one for international men’s fashion magazine F**king Young!

How to Know if Comments Are Legit

In this instance, Charles was contacted by a reputable agency due to a comment on his social media yet it is important to be wary as a teenage boy. It seems like the comment on his photo was quite vague yet included an email to be contacted on. There is no harm in sending an email to enquire yet do not agree to meet unless you know the agency is trustworthy. Always bring a parent when arranging a meeting to guarantee your safety.

In addition, do not hand over any money. Since the individual contacting via social media may be a scam artist. Research is key to locating whether a certain name or organisation is not legit. A model scorned will open up to prevent the predator from preying on others. Therefore, researching via the internet or model forums will most likely be productive and find the answer you are looking for. If it is a well known agency that had a good reputation you will be able to locate positive testimonials too.

teen-male-modelling-agencies

Also, ring the agency in question to follow up on the comment. If the scam artist is using a recognised agency name to hide behind and to entice impressionable models, one phone call will sort out any doubts. Since it is very easy to set up a false account many do so with no conscience. A very professional looking logo as their profile image is convincing enough. Also, a grid or feed full of high quality model shots is easy to achieve so act cautiously. If the comment asks of anything inappropriately decline immediately. Never send nude images or undress on Skype. Social media can be a dangerous place for young minds. Therefore, it requires for you to be very savvy and mature at a young age.

Be Cautious

The internet and social media platforms are faceless and can easily be manipulated therefore, tread extremely carefully. Instagram is a popular platform that does enhance a models career and has become a portfolio for many models. Yet, do not trust everyone who contacts you via social media. Ask for second opinions and carry out research to ensure your safety. It is easy to become over excited and to trust everyone. Yet remember the industry attracts scam artists who prey on teenagers innocence and naivety.

There are many legit male modelling agencies, which help young hopefuls achieve their dreams. It takes experience and wisdom to identify those from the untrustworthy organisations.

teen-male-modelling-agencies

Your Profile

Upload professional model shots and selfies to promote your talent but DO NOT trust every comment!! Follow Instagram profiles to get a feel for the types of images to upload. From their appearances on runways at fashion week, behind the scenes hair and make-up shots and beautiful holiday snaps frequent insta-models profiles.

It is a way of enhancing your career. Yet do not rely solely on this method. It is unlikely that you will be signed to a reputable agency this way alone. It has been known to happen yet most have to work extremely hard to find their place.

How to Become Signed to an Agency

Agents are extremely busy with a constant stream of applications daily. Yes, as in Charles Levi’s case they may come across an Instagram account that impresses them yet they do not sit all day scrolling through profiles. In the hope of becoming signed to an agency it is strongly advised to actually apply to the organistaion. Therefore, read their application requires and proceed accordingly.

teen-male-modelling-agencies

Usually they demand for aspiring models to fill out an application form with photographs attached to show their talent. Complete the form, hit send and wait for a reply is how the process unfolds each time. Yet, for instant feedback agencies hold walk ins at specific times for potential talent to attend. Make sure you stick to the time slots to avoid a wasted journey. Be confident and friendly to make a great first impression. Try to use your nerves as enthusiasm and a positive energy for a good result. Finally, remember the industry is rife with rejection so do not expect to be signed on the first attempt. Keep persisting!

How did you become signed to your modelling agency? We would love to hear your story!! Please comment below.

Who are preteen models?

As the title suggests, the label includes older children aged around 9-12 years. Once your child has blossomed from a cute toddler into a beautiful junior then you might be considering getting them into modelling.

TV ads, catalogues and magazine modelling as well as toy and healthcare packaging all use models in this age group so there could be plenty of opportunities for your child.

Young models are considered valuable to various retail ad agencies as they often represent the latest trend and fashion.

Before you decide if your preteen has what it takes to become a model, ask yourself the following questions:

preteen-models

Can I spare the time?

As a parent or guardian your participation in your child’s modelling career is not just a legal requirement, it is essential to ensure the safety of your child and avoid scams. With good support and supervision modelling can be fun for both of you.

How do I find a good agent?

Finding a good quality, reputable modelling agency is the first step in getting your child into modelling. Agents will sign pre teen models who are confident, enthusiastic and unique.

Make sure that you thoroughly research the agency to find a reputable establishment that appeals to you and your child. A parents instinct combined with careful research will find a suitable agency.

UK Models will advise you on finding a reputable agent and give you a clear idea of what will be expected of you and your child.

preteen-models

Will I need photographs of my child?

Modelling agencies will expect you to send a selection of good quality photographs, both full length and close up head and shoulder images so they can get a good idea of what you look like.

Pictures should be clear and your child should look natural rather than made-up or over-styled. UK Models can work with you to create a professional set of images that can be used to approach agencies and casting directors, and that those agencies can go on and use to promote you.

As experts in the industry UK Models understand that your preteen’s face and personality are the most important things that should show through in any photographs.

What about money?

Model earnings can vary greatly, ranging from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds per year, and should not be your main motivation for getting your child into modelling.

Your child’s agent will take a cut of any earnings and you may have to make an initial outlay in order to join some agencies so bear that in mind.

Make sure that you are aware of all the costs and deductions before you agree to take the role. After you have signed the contract the price will stand at what is stated on the document.

preteen-models

Will we need to travel?

Depending on where you live, you and your child are likely to need to travel around the country in order to attend castings and modelling jobs. Depending on the job, your travel expenses may be reimbursed though not always.

It is important to not let modelling interrupt your child’s education by booking far away jobs in the school holidays or at weekends.

What happens after my child signs with an agency?

Most agents will want to take their own photographs of your child to use on their websites and in their offices. If your child is selected he/she will usually need to attend a casting to audition for a job.

During a casting an agent or client may want to take a photo of your child but this should not happen without your consent and supervision. The job itself could involve several hours of hair, make-up, styling and photography or filming so you and your child will need to be patient.

Finally, you will need to factor in school absences as most modelling jobs take place on weekdays and during term time. You will need to obtain a licence from your local council in order for your school to approve any disruptions to your child’s education.

preteen-models

Are child models legal?

Yes, child modelling is legal with your parents permission. An infant or teen is only able to be signed to an agency or modelling role with their mum or dads approval.

A legit establishment will present a contract outlining all aspects for your parents to sign. This procedure is put in place for your safety. If they fail to have a formal document available it is more than likely that the organisation is not legit.

Unfortunately, the industry can attract scam artists and predators. It is important that you research each opportunity before agreeing to the role. Never meet a potential opportunity alone. Always inform your parents and bring them along.

Child models for Next

High street giants such as Next, H&M and M&S hire young models to promote their clothing. In store campaign material, magazine ads and video commercials require a teen girl or boy to model their latest designs.

It is essential that young models have the confidence to meet new people and perform in front of the camera. Top brands all compete each season to attract customers and secure sales. Therefore, professional, fun and unique images are required.

Each year or season, brands will contact agencies who specialise in this age to find suitable models. Therefore, it is worthwhile focusing on finding an agency rather than contacting the labels directly.

preteen-models

Child Models for Catalogues

Catalogues also require preteen models to promote their newest designs. The likes of Littlewoods and Very publish product shots that could involve modelling clothes or promoting the latest teen gadget.

The large amount of images required is good news for young models who are hoping to launch a career. Again, catalogues will approach agencies to scout suitable models. Therefore, it is worth concentrating your efforts on signing to an agency.

What makes a teen model?

Of course you will need to have a great look if you want to get into modelling; however you will need more than a pretty face to be successful. You will also need good clear skin, shiny hair, a healthy body, a positive attitude and confidence.

What does a teen model do?

The work of a teenage model can vary greatly depending on the model job, however you can expect to spend quite a lot of time going along to castings (where models are ‘auditioned’ for jobs or to get signed by model agencies).

Going to a casting does not guarantee you will get the modelling job and you could be rejected several times before you get booked so it is important not to take it personally or feel too disappointed if you miss out sometimes.

If you are booked to model for a photo shoot or filming, you will most likely have your hair and make-up done before being given clothing and accessories to wear. You might be working in a studio or out on location. Either way, there are likely to be a few people around such as a photographer, director, stylist, assistant, client and maybe other teen or child models.

modelling-jobs-for-14-year-olds-in-the-uk

You will probably have to wait around for long periods of time whilst lighting is set up and props are arranged, and you may be asked to pose or say your lines over and over again until it’s perfect.

Fashion models will also have hair and make-up done and outfits to put on, and will then be expected to walk up and down in front of an audience and show off the clothes you are given. You might need to change outfits several times. Modelling can be very tiring, but you will be able to take regular breaks.

Can my parent/guardian come with me?

It is essential to have the permission of a parent or legal guardian if you want to work as a model, and they will need to accompany you to castings and on jobs. Having the support of your family is also important when it comes to understanding the requirements of signing with a modelling agency, arranging time off school and paying for up front expenses including travel and accommodation costs, model agency fees and your portfolio.

Industry experts UK Models can offer advice on finding reputable agencies and help you create the professional portfolio of pictures you will need to take to show casting directors.

Stay safe

Taking a parent or relative with you to all modelling jobs will guarantee your safety. Never attend a photoshoot alone or meet up with a person from the Internet that you do not know. Always discuss via professional channels i.e never communicate via social media platforms. Also, be open with your parents as their life experience and wisdom will guide you to accept the correct jobs.

The types of teen modelling jobs

Campaign/advertisements:

Brands such as H&M, Marks & Spencers and Next all shoot campaigns to promote their latest designs for in store material, window displays, magazine ads and billboards. The images are aimed at a teen audience and are typically playful, fun poses. Fashion is a big contender yet other industries also need teens for marketing material. Commercial work is where the majority of model jobs will come from.

Catalogue modelling:

Similarly, catalogue brands use teens to show how their designs fit or can be used (technical products). The catalogue usually covers the whole family with womenswear, menswear and kidswear sections. The poses will be natural and realistic to reflect their day to day life.

Runway modelling:

Teens have been known to walk for high fashion designers to much controversy; an issue that causes much disapproval. Shopping centres may host a fashion show, which will use teens to promote their the latest trends from teen retailers.

A lot of models are discovered in their teens

Recently there has been a boom in celebrity offspring turning to modelling. Having protection of parents and their carefully nurtured links over the years is definitely an advantage. Parents can guide their teen, knowing who to trust and work with.

At 14, Moss was queuing at the JFK check-in when Storm founder Sarah Doukas spotted her. She is now one of the most famous supermodels in history with a career that has spanned just under 30 years.

Maturity

Modelling demands maturity at a young age. Therefore, determination and hard work along with a professional attitude is required to be a successful teen model. Also, expectations are high in the modelling world with young hopefuls having to grow up quickly. Making a good first impression is vital to your success as even at a young age competition is high.

Education

It is important to view your drive for modelling as a hobby until your education is complete. Therefore, never abandon your studies for a modelling opportunity. If the fashion career does not take off you will need for your qualifications to pursue another dream. Ensure you schedule modelling jobs in the holidays and at weekends to successfully balance both. Once you have finished your studies you can embrace your modelling career and see what opportunities arise. A good model agency and brand will understand your situation as they are familiar with working with teens. Many models are found at 14 and are given training, appropriate jobs around their school timetable. The support allows young talent to be ready after graduation.

Gain Experience

Firstly make sure it’s a career path you want to take. Once your decision is made it is important to find experience to build your portfolio. At first you may have to accept voluntary work to gain valuable experience. Use these opportunities to your advantage to develop your modelling skills and only accept offers that enhance your CV.

Should teen models feature on the high fashion catwalk and in elite magazines?

As we have distinguished teen modelling is a legit niche within the fashion industry with talent featuring in campaigns targeted their age range. However, the controversy begins when teens from 13-15 grace the runway for top designers and front major fashion campaigns. The ultimate question is are they ready for such a pressure at such a young age thrust into an unknown world unprotected and vulnerable?

Top fashion houses such as Prada and Balenciaga have hired models as young as 13 to walk at fashion weeks and to front their latest campaign. The boyish, waif like image that most designers strive for puts pressure to find the unattainable figure that no woman can possibly sustain. Therefore, teens who can fulfil the brief are plucked from their everyday life putting an immense value on youth. Also, many have no experience of the industry or desire to pursue a modelling career until the scout hands them a business card. It’s a very confusing message from brands aimed at women yet are modelled by innocent teens.

A bad reputation

Successful models who were scouted in their teenage years claim that the high fashion industry is no place for naive girls who cannot cope emotionally. Travelling to unknown countries alone with high expectations is overwhelming and intimidating for such young minds. The industry is asking for barely teens to survive in an adult world with little support.

For example 15 year old, Swiss-Croatian model, Valerija Sestic, walked 16 shows in 15 days at NYFW. A dream for many young hopefuls yet the reality is demanding, gruelling and very hard work for a teen. Long days, followed by the reality of fashion plus the pressure to impress is no easy task for adolescents.

That Dior Show

sofia-mechetner

When Sofia Mechetner opened the Dior Haute Couture show at 14 wearing a sheer white dress exposing her chest many were horrified! The teen was far too young to be sexualised in such a way yet Paris does not adhere to the laws that England and America have put into place. The British Fashion Council and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have banned models under 16 on the catwalk – and rightly so.

The strive for everlasting youth

It is worrying that designers are using teen models to promote their womenswear lines. By twenty many models have reached retirement age with the demand for a fresh-faced, innocent look; a look in-between girlhood and womanhood. The designers need to take responsibility by exclusively hiring models over 18. It is their duty to reflect their audience rather than creating an unattainable, fantasy of everlasting youth.

Young, naive models are at risk with predators preying on their innocence. Working in a new city/country, with little protection and support the teens feel lost and insecure. Their limited life experience may lead to trusting the wrong person. It’s a scary world to be apart of at adolescence.

How to deal with criticism

Coping with rejection and harsh criticism is difficult for a self assured adult to digest never mind a 14 year old who is still in the process of figuring out their identity. It could have damaging results to a young mind who is not ready for the negativity and blow to their self esteem. In the high fashion world the swooping statements and harsh judgements are more severe with unrealistic ideals at play. The danger of eating disorders and teens desperately trying to loose weight is far too real.

gisele-bundchen

Gisele Bundchen at 14 was told her nose was too big or her eyes were too small. After 42, yes 42, casting rejections Gisele was hired and her supermodel career  has gone from strength to strength! Her story is one to remember for all the young, aspiring models out there. Everyone has a different opinion and ideas change constantly. Therefore, you may be out one minute and in the next so try not to let their comments stick and believe in yourself.

Gisele Bundchen states: “I remember some people telling me my nose was too big or my eyes were too small, that I could never be on a magazine cover. It wasn’t easy to be 14 and hear that kind of criticism. It made me feel insecure.”

16 year old female models launch onto the scene regularly becoming the model of the moment to watch. In a blink of an eye a fresh faced beauty is spotted everywhere you look gracing fashion ads. Sadly, she can vanish in a flash unless she stands the test of time. It is a difficult industry to survive in with fresh new talent arriving everyday. The competition is fierce and a lot of pressure is put on 16 year old female models shoulders. The race is brutal, harsh and stressful and only the toughest survive. Do not be dazzled by the glamour of the magazines the industry is only for the dedicated.

If you’re thinking of becoming a teen model, head over to our teen modelling page and register today.

Roos Abels

The Designers

The dutch fresh faced beauty impressed the fashion world by walking for Prada during Milan Fashion Week aged 14. The demand required special permission from her school and parents due to her young age.

Since, she has secured campaigns with the likes of Gucci and Dior and graced the runway for an estimated 40 shows during AW16; an impressive, mind blowing CV at such a young age when most are deciding what route to steer their lives in next.

The Look

The newest it girl has risen to model fame due to her classic look. Her long dirty blonde locks, even features and flawless skin has stopped industry experts in their tracks. Scouted in Amsterdam by Kim Ackerman, she was immediately signed to Brave, no questions asked.

The Travel

“I’ve just started, so I’m very happy with the things I’ve done. I just love travelling in the most beautiful places and meeting new people backstage and on set.” she explains.

The model of the moment is required to travel extensively to accommodate the designers vision and for prestige fashion weeks; a very exciting lifestyle for a young girl. It is clear she is making the most of every opportunity in front of the camera.

“It’s always an amazing adventure because you never know what the location will be. For the Gucci campaign we worked on the beach, while for the Dior campaign, we were in a studio, but the pictures are both amazing!”

The Education

Even with her new found model status, Abels is required to juggle her studies and successful career. However, she wouldn’t change her position and is enjoying every moment.

Roos Abels is absorbing every moment and simply enjoying all aspects of her new career. She finds rest and comfort by returning home to her small town with her family, which is a great solution to keep her grounded. The whirlwind is exciting, fun and adventurous but it is also extremely important to complete your studies and stay connected with family.

“[I love] that my whole family lives there, and, if I come back after a working trip, it’s nice to live in a small town where we can all reunite. “It has been an amazing time because I got the chance to walk for so many designers. I wish I’d known at the start of my career that you really don’t need to stress about anything; the important thing is just to have fun and be around nice people.” she concludes.

17 year old male models are wanted by the fashion industry. Model scouts and agents are always seeking young hopefuls to transform into the next big thing. The fashion industry is a forever evolving arena with new faces gracing the catwalks and advertising campaigns each season. With the explosion of social media and Instagram in particular the scope has widened considerably. Take a look at the 17 year old male models who have successfully carved an incredible career.

Lucky Blue Smith

Meet the 17 year old with peroxide blonde hair and piercing blue eyes in all his six-foot-two inch glory. There is no wonder why the likes of Tom Ford, Moncler and Calvin Klein Jeans have fell for his charm. The insta-stud has welcomed a HUGE following on Instagram; a frenzy of teenage girls desperate for a glimpse. A model scout first noticed Lucky Blue at the tender age of 10 and was signed at 12. Since he has wowed the fashion world walking for Michael Kors, Versace and Fendi.

Charles Levi

Hailed as the “young Leo (DiCaprio)” Charles was found via his selfie uploads on Instagram; a prime example that the social media platform has become a modern portfolio for aspiring models. Photographer, Richard Sawyer spotted the model potential uploading some of his own pictures to his Instagram. He of course, got permission from Charles first. His predictions came true when Jaime McHugh from the Chadwick Modeling Agency offered him a place.

Luka Sabbat

He claims that the highlight of his career was working for the likes of Kanye West; a figure he has looked up to throughout his teenage years. A great achievement considering he entered the modelling world accidentally at 15 years old. Working for likes of Vogue and i-D his exposure to the fashion world at a young age paid off. His mother was a stylist for John Galliano and Dior and his father designed clothes in Paris. Recognised for his signature curly hair the now 18 year old has so much to offer the modelling industry.

It’s clear that the fashion industry is full of young talent with many 17 year old male models gracing fashion shows. When approached by an agency or model scout please act cautious to avoid becoming part of a scam. Charles Levi was approached via Instagram with an email address, which of course turned out to be legit. However, research the company first to find out their reputation in the industry. Excitement and desperation can take over so please investigate further first. A quick internet search can easily highlight predators who are preying on young individuals. If unsure please find support before taking action.

How to become a model at 15 is a question asked by young talent who would like to become aware of potential opportunities. At fifteen years of age, models are classed as teens and need permission from their parents. You will be seen as a teenager until turning 18 where you will be able to make decisions independently. Agencies and employers will ask for your parents consent before you begin modelling. Therefore, your mum or dad must be on board with your dream. It is a daunting task to approach your parents at this age in case they disagree with your decision. However, it is vital that you talk to them in advance to applying to a teen model agency to avoid disappointment.

how to become a model at 15

Ask you parents

Do not ignore the fact that you require your parents consent to pursue modelling. Putting off the conversation will not make it disappear yet prolong the nerves further. Choose a time where your parents seem relaxed and simply ask for a chat with them. Explain your ideas in a calm way including all the knowledge you have on the future career and your reasons for choosing this route. You may be pleasantly surprised by their reaction.

how to become a model at 15

Do not get angry

If the answer is a no do not start an argument and get angry towards them. This reaction will not help the situation and in fact, make it a lot worse. Ask for your parents to go away and think about your proposal as they may change their mind. However, if you storm off in a tantrum the situation will become worse and demonstrate how you are not ready to start a career yet. Remember that your parents love you and are trying to protect you from harm. Therefore, may come round to the idea after some time especially if you are calm.

how to become a model at 15

Be mature

Working in the modelling industry demands a level of maturity and professionalism from an early age. Seriously thinking about your future at this age is the first step and wising up to how the industry works is essential. If you approach your mum and dad in a mature, responsible way they will be more likely to work with you. Make them aware that you do not plan to give up your education but will work out a way to succeed at both. Those who work from H&M, Next and M&S all juggle both.

Find out the facts

It is important to work out all the facts prior to the discussion. Of course, you will need guidance and support from your parents. If you can present the research that you have gathered in preparation they will be more impressed and know that you are serious about your career. Look at agencies, modelling schools and support companies to understand what is asked of you. Your parents will be able to assess this information too and come to a decision quicker. Your safety is paramount and by doing research you will hopefully be able to spot the trustworthy companies.

How to become a model at 15 is a process that heavily involves your parents. Work together in making your teen modelling career a success!

Parent approval

Those under the age of 18 require parents consent to be signed to an agency or take part in a photoshoot by law. Age

Teen modelling spans the age range of 12-17. Under 12 is child modelling and over 17 deems you no longer an adolescent. Agencies who support teenage modelling will only hire hopefuls of this age and will not blur the boundaries. It is a clear, set marker aimed to categorise models into the correct niche. The agency can focus on finding castings for this age group, which will have a different approach than other divisions. Teens model for clothing brands such as H&M, Next and Marks & Spencers with a few having the opportunity to work with top designer labels. Agencies specialising in this sector will have strong connections to different industry professionals that cater for teenagers.

how to become a teen model

Education

Passing exams and completing your education is a must. Teen models cannot drop out of school to pursue their modelling career, you have to find a way to juggle both. Your education is extremely important and therefore, you are required to focus on your school work without missing too much of class. Some photoshoots will be during school hours and you and your parents will be expected to fill out the correct forms to allow for you to attend. It is up to you to demonstrate that you have the maturity and determination to complete both to a high standard. If you begin to fail exams it will become noticed, which could hinder your modelling career. Do you think you have what it takes to juggle both?

how to become a teen model

Parents consent

Teenage models require their parents consent to take part in modelling opportunities. You may feel mature and wise enough to make your own decisions yet your mother or father have the final say, which must be respected. Remember that your parents have much more life experience and will fiercely protect you from harm if needed. Therefore, some decisions are coming from a place of love and fear for your safety. The best way to make important choices is to talk calmly and maturely about the modelling opportunity and come to an agreement. Your parents will have a huge part to play in your career at this stage as it will dramatically affect their life too. Attending photoshoots, castings and offering emotional support are just a few of the things they will be faced with. Therefore, it is very much a joint decision.

Jobs for 14 year olds are pretty hard to come by, which is why modelling at this age can be even trickier to turn into a career. At the age of 14, you’re still a child in the eyes of the law, which means that there are a fair few restrictions which must be imposed on you. It’s illegal for employers – including modelling agencies – to ignore these strict rules on jobs for 14 year olds.

At UK Models we abide by these strict rules, if you would like to become a teen model, register with us today!

The Law on Jobs for 14 Year Olds (And Other Minors)

If you’re looking to start work as a model, you’ll need a few things. Namely:

  • A parent or guardian MUST accompany you to every single meeting or photoshoot. Please don’t feel embarrassed (we know it can seem a little awkward), but it is the law. Jobs for 14 year olds can be daunting, and in the long run, you’ll learn to appreciate having someone there to support you and fight your corner!
  • Child models MUST have a licence from the local council if they’re working in modelling. This is because there are a lot of restrictions on the hours that a child may legally work, and sometimes this clashes with modelling requirements. To be granted one, your council will put your health, happiness and safety first. Criteria includes whether the job will affect aspects of your life (such as your education) or whether your school and/or parents give you content to miss classes and other age-appropriate activities.

teen-model

Do You Have a Licence?

  • If you go abroad to model (lucky you!), you must also have a ‘children performing abroad’ licence. This applies to all performance jobs for 14 year olds in this field.
  • The Protection Of Children Act 1978 protects children from being featured in indecent images. This means that there are certain codes of conduct that anyone giving modelling jobs to 14 year olds must adhere to. For example, no nudist images, bare breasts or child pornography can be distributed. You do NOT have to pose scantily clad, and indeed this is illegal. You can report anyone who even asks you to do this. It’s not just about discomfort; it’s a breach in the law.

teen-model

Banned from the Catwalk

  • There are current talks about banning under 16s from the catwalk. Ten years ago, they tried to do this but were unsuccessful. There are arguments that a teen body is not representative of the women’s clothing brands that teen models so often represent. The industry has to be careful not to promote unrealistic or unhealthy body image. You should not be asked to lose weight for a job as a minor, but please be wary, as unfortunately this does happen.
  • Any good modelling agency will ask for your age as well as identification before you can work with them. This means that there’s absolutely no point in lying! The laws are there to protect you.

Jobs for 14 year olds should only be taken with extreme consideration. You have the rest of your life to work! However, they’re a great way to start your career and get you experience in the modelling field. Your youthful looks will be looked upon favourably, you’ll meet great people, and you’ll have fun!
