What is an Efolio?

An eFolio – also known as a modelling portfolio – is a great way to showcase your potential to modelling agencies and brands.

While a typical portfolio is a folder with hard-copies of printed photos, and eFolio is an online version. As most things in life become electronic, the eFolio is a great way to update your modelling portfolio, allowing you to quickly send it to prospective employees and also enables you to edit and update it with ease.

And that’s not all. The eFolio also contains your modelling credentials and other vital information like measurements and experience (think of it as like a CV for models). This information could mean the difference between landing a job and being passed over for a more experienced alternative.

Why Do I Need an eFolio?

An eFolio shows you are serious about your modelling career. This updated and modern way of showcasing your skills makes life for both yourself and for your casting agent much easier. Hard portfolios can be space-consuming and cumbersome, while the eFolio is a much slicker and more convenient way to get your details to the right people.

It’s also a great way to help you stand out from the masses. A polished, up-to-date eFolio will look very professional and help agencies and casting agents to see your potential.

Self-marketing and self-promotion are important ways to get jobs as a model. The rise of social media in particular has enabled models to use the internet to create an online presence and get themselves noticed.

An eFolio also gives you plenty of control over what people’s first impression of you as a model is. While it’s nice to have a hard-copy of your portfolio for in-person meetings, an online version is flexible enough to be sent almost immediately anywhere in the world at the click of a button.

Do I Need Modelling Experience?

The good news is – no! You don’t need any experience to create a fantastic eFolio.

This does mean that, if you do have no modelling experience, you will have less professional photos and you will therefore need to be even more careful about selecting you eFolio shots. Selfies and camera phone images won’t cut it – you need high-quality, professional photos that will stand up against shots taken by brands. With no experience, this means you’ll need to organise getting some photos taken at a professional photoshoot.

This isn’t as scary as it sounds – in fact, it’s a brilliant opportunity not only to get some amazing photos but also to get some solid experience in front of the camera and in a professional photoshoot environment. While hiring a traditional photographer is an option, a better decision is to find a studio that works specifically with modelling. This way you will get an authentic experience and have the opportunity to work with people in the industry who will be able to provide you with plenty of tips and tricks to improve your modelling.

How Do I Get Started?

Finding the right studio can be a nightmare. You want people who know what they are doing who have lots of experience in the field and who can guide you along the way.

That’s where UK Models come in. We provide a professional service for models looking for a high-quality online portfolio that they can use in the industry.

How Can UK Models Help?

UK Models has plenty of experience working with models and helping them find work in a notoriously difficult industry. Their photoshoots provide models with the whole experience of a professional shoot – including hair and make-up application by pros.

Get in contact now by filling in the form and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible to book your photoshoot.

The Layout of Your eFolio

The overall layout and presentation of your portfolio are vital to get right. Beautiful images will be lost in unattractive layouts. A format that is clear, concise and professional is the best way to showcase your images and really help them to stand out.

If your e-folio is messy or unclear, industry experts will not spend any more time perusing it. This is also why image order is important, too. You must grab their attention from the moment they see the e-folio. Don’t leave your best images to the last page, as a time-conscious viewer may not even get there if you haven’t captured their interest from the offset.

How to Maintain Your Modelling eFolio

It’s important that you keep your modelling portfolio as up-to-date as possible. This includes getting rid of outdated images and replacing them with newer ones.

Be selective about the images you show in your e-folio. It’s not about squeezing as many photos of yourself as you can into it – it’s about carefully selecting the images that most show your potential as a model and that show your range. Do not include any shots that don’t do you justice.

Think carefully about the model you wish to portray. Think about brands and images that you love and aspire to. You also need to think about your

It’s not just the images that need updating. Your model information like your name, weight, height and other measurements should all be as accurate as possible. We all fluctuate and you will likely grow a couple of inches if you started modelling young. It’s important to keep this information as correct as possible – not doing so many lose you a modelling job.

Staying Safe Online

Having an e-folio opens your world to a whole set of different opportunities. However, as with everyone who contacts you via the internet, it is important to verify information sent by any potential brands or employees to ensure they are legitimate.

A brand or agency who contacts you via or because of your e-folio will be more than happy to supply their credentials and provide proof that they are who they are. Ensure you research the person and the company by looking up their information for yourself. Don’t call numbers or write to e-mails they provide. Ensure you find the proper website and contact them via their official contact information for verification.

It’s easy to get excited and overlook this step, but it is a vital one for anyone who is contacted by someone they don’t know via the internet. Spending a short amount of time to verify brands and people will help protect you from unwanted scams and potential danger.

Model eBooks

A model eBook is like an e-folio but better. The eBook is like an online magazine and can showcase even better high-quality images than those found in an e-folio.

Model advertisements regularly pop up to entice young new faces to apply. There are many things to consider. You should not apply straight away out of eagerness and desperation. Stay safe and act with caution.

Models Wanted in the UK

The United Kingdom is very attractive in the industry for a range of reasons. To you, it may have been your home for numerous years and wish for sunnier, more exotic climes. However, there are new jobs right on your doorstep that you should not dismiss so easily.

Central London is one of the fashion capitals of the world. A lot of top brands will be looking to hire people from this area, given their proximity to key events and shoots. Plus, us Londoners are often renowned for understanding fashion in a way that simply cannot be learned. So, when those at the top are asking for male and female models, they’re often actually asking for a style and natural ability, which is typically associated with England – but they’re also thinking on a practical level, too. Other large cities outside of London such as Birmingham will have opportunities for photoshoots yet not on the same scale.

Would you like to take that first in your modelling career? Simply register with us today!

models-wanted-uk

The UK is a highly diverse country with people of a range of different ethnicities, backgrounds, shapes and sizes. All fill a very different niche depending on what an agency or casting director is looking for at any one given time.

The UK has a lot of connections with other international fashion capitals, and the world’s best media, photographers, celebrities and others in the know. It’s highly connected and cosmopolitan, so you may be based at one of the modelling agencies in the UK but are asked to fly to Europe and beyond for modelling opportunities such as a location photoshoot or fashion show.

What You Need to Know…

  • Whilst the model callout can seem like an attractive concept, there are still requirements that you need to fit. The kind of agency willing to accept anyone from the UK isn’t likely to have the same kind of modelling opportunities available for its models as those who are pickier. It’s all very well and good to be a model in general, but you’re unlikely to see success for a while.
  • When you see ‘Models Wanted UK’ in an advert, do your research. Sometimes people get overly excited that their dreams might be about to come true, but unless you understand the requirements and/or what’s being promised of the modelling job, you don’t know if this is really what you’re looking for.
  • If you do make it big, being from the UK doesn’t necessarily mean anything. You’ll most likely be required to travel the world for fashion shoots. This is a highly exciting perk of the job, but remember – it’s a job. If you miss home, you can’t just hop back on a plane. There are contracts and all kinds in place, so don’t be a liability!
  • Remember that the fashion industry is very unpredictable. It is not a typical 9-5 structure. It works with flexible hours and on a part time basis. You may get more job alerts at certain time of the year and have a busy period, which may calm down. Therefore, you need to constantly be on the look out for open castings advertised by high street brands if you’re in the commercial sector.

Are You the Right Person for the Job?

You may be super excited when you are asked to attend a casting or see a modelling job advert. However, make sure that you have all the requirements needed. It is important to balance an eagerness for the role with a sensible approach. An easy example is, if they are looking for a male model and you are female, there is literally no chance in you getting it. Make sure you read the ad. Also, if they are looking for a glamour model but you do not feel comfortable posing in this way, simply don’t feel as though you have to attend absolutely everything.

Another point to look out for is the age restriction, which will be most likely be stated on the advert or in the job title. For example, if mature models is in the description, they will be looking for a male or female model of an older generation. Teen models usually fits within the age restriction of 12-17 years old.

Of course, it is good to go to a lot of different castings for various roles within your niche to keep your options open and to gain valuable experience in auditions such as these. The best way to go about securing castings is to be signed to an agency that can use their connections to find you suitable roles. It takes the pressure off you searching for modelling jobs however; if you are successful they will take a percentage of your hourly rate for their part in getting you the job. Make sure you are signed to a trustworthy agency to ensure the castings you are invited to attend are legit. Agencies are usually looking for attractive confident models.

Don’t Trust Everything You See on the Internet

models-wanted-uk

As we’ve mentioned time and time again, models need to be wary of scam artists on the internet. Unfortunately, sometimes it is not a place of trust and predators try to prey on naïve teens who are eager to become a model. If an appealing job advert lands in your inbox or social media private messages, please be skeptical. It is extremely unlikely to be truthful and could be luring you into a trap. Becoming a model is not so easy. They are most likely trying to scam a large sum of money, get nude/topless images of you or put your in a very dangerous situation. If you do receive a message, email or comment inviting you for a model job please do the following:

The Steps to Follow….

  • Firstly, do not hide the message from your parents. Please be open and honest as acting secretively could potentially put you in a dangerous situation.
  • Remember that agencies rarely send a Facebook or Instagram message. Yes, it has become slightly more acceptable to scout models on Instagram. If the handle is from a well-known company, ring them to find out for sure. Do not use the number they provide but search for it yourself. They may be giving you a false number and pretend to be an agent.
  • Scan the text for inappropriate language such as ‘hunny’, ‘gorgeous’, ‘sexy.’ Agents and trustworthy companies will not use terminology such as these as they are much more professional .
  • Research the job in question and the company they claim to be from.
  • Never meet them or agree to the opportunity unless you are 100% certain it is legit.
  • Do not send nude pictures or undress on a video chat such as Skype. They may claim they need to see your figure but this is untrue in an attempt to trick you.
  • If you see an advert on social media stating ‘models wanted for commercial modelling’ it may not be legit. Always do thorough research as this could easily be a scam.

So it’s true, you may see model advertisements across the web and other sources. However, you can’t just walk into a dream modelling career 99% of the time. It takes a lot of dedication, common sense and caution! It is great to come up with a social media strategy that will boost your followers but please do be cautious with those that message you.

Whether you are new to the industry or have been working as a model for some time, you may well have been asked to sign a free model release form. There can be some confusion amongst models and professional photographers about the need for and protection offered by such legal documents. We have compiled a brief guide to help you decide whether or not to sign (though this does not constitute as legal advice).

Are you thinking of becoming a model? See if you have what it takes by registering with us.

What Is a Model Release Form?

A model release form offers written permission for the photographer to use images taken during a photoshoot, for commercial purposes. If the model is under 18 years of age then the form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Child models need their parents consent to take part in any kind of modelling.

The form offers protection to models and photographers and it is essential that both are aware of the legal document whilst working in the industry.

model-release-form

When Are They Used?

Such forms are generally used when the images feature a clearly identifiable subject (model) who is featured in part, or all, of the main image. They are less likely to be used if the images are not being created for commercial use.

Do not feel intimidated or nervous to ask for a model release form if the organisers or professional photographer in charge does not present the legal contract. It is up to you as a model and your parent/guardian to act savvy and speak up for what you are entitled to.

What Is Commercial Use?

This can be a grey area but usually relates to photos that are used to promote, advertise or otherwise support a product or service. The term commercial might suggest that it only applies to images that are sold, but that is not always the case.

Whilst photographers often sell their work, an image could be given away for free and still require your signed consent. Even if a free image is used in an advertising campaign then it becomes commercial.

Make sure you are clued up on the usage of the photos. Once the document is signed you are releasing the images for commercial use, which spans a wide umbrella. Ask as many questions as you feel necessary to feel reassured and confident.

model-release-form

What Are the Advantages?

The commercial purpose of any photographs you appear in is usually made clear when you are booked for a modelling job. However, you might want to use the form to add specific restrictions to the use of your image. You may not want your identity to be associated with a particular product, subject or service. For example, to avoid association with sex, drugs or violence you can state it on the form.

The official document gives you a sense of control over your modelling career. It protects you from scam artists who may use the image in an inappropriate way that cannot be challenged if the contract is left unsigned. Always ask for your own copy for your own protection.

Should I Sign One or Not?

Ultimately, whether or not you wish to sign the release is entirely your decision. Some photographers will insist on it whilst others will be more relaxed. Signing the form could reduce the likelihood of your image being used in a way you might not be happy about. Not signing one does not guarantee that your image will stay out of the public domain. It could still be passed on to magazines, websites and other third parties for editorial use without your consent.

The document is intended to offer legal protection for both you and the photographer. Therefore, it is important to fully understand the consequences. Young models can sometimes act in a naive way that puts them at risk. They are afraid to speak up in case the opportunity is taken away. However, models need to be business minded to navigate the industry successfully. Carry out research and take your career into your own hands.

model-release-form

What Does a Model Release Form Look Like?

Many aspiring models are new to the industry and are most likely unfamiliar of what the document looks like. Depending on the company that you are working with each form will look slightly different. However, the intention is the same to hand over permission of the images that you feature in.

Expect to find:

  • A paragraph (or two) written at the top of the page stating the photographers name and what you are giving permission to. For example, where the photo can be used, how the image can be altered and handing over the rights of the shot to the photographer.
  • The rest is left blank for the model to fill in with prompts of what should be written in each space. It is usually your personal data e.g. name of model, telephone number etc
  • Photoshoot information – date and location.
  • Models signature.
  • Print your name for legibility.
  • State your date of birth.
  • Declare your current address.
  • Provide your email address.
  • State the current date.
  • If under 18, there is an option for your legal guardian to sign the document and print their name.
  • 2 witness are usually required to sign the form and to write their address.

Please find a model release form template here. There are many free templates online to gauge what the document should look like if you are unsure.

UK Models Can Help

Modelling industry experts such as UK Models can offer further advice on completing the paperwork required when working as a model. However, you may also want to seek professional legal advice if you have specific questions or concerns. The same goes for any client contracts that you need looking over. It is better to address these queries prior to the shoot. Leaving it until later may lead to some legal issues.

Always make sure that you fully understand every detail of the form and that you are happy to proceed. Never feel pressured or obliged to sign the document as you need to feel confident in your decision. Ask a friend or relative for advice also for a second opinion. A fresh pair of eyes may spot something that you missed.

A female model is a term given to individuals over the age of 18 who pose and strut for a living. Many hopefuls strive to become a successful model and pursue the dream as a full time career. The profession is extremely competitive especially for this gender yet there are many resources and routes to take to support an individuals plight.

Do you have what it takes to become a model? Let’s take a look.

How to Become a Female model

Those wishing to pursue a modelling career is required to have passion and drive to ensure that they can kick start their own journey. If you choose to have an agency as representation or opt for the freelance route you will have to be enthusiastic and motivated to secure roles and become noticed in the modelling scene.

Very rarely will experts approach you without a lot of effort and persistence from your part. A few top models have been scouted whilst at a festival, tube station or cafe yet most have to work hard to see their career unfold.

female-model

The Industry Demands Flexibility

Modelling is not a full time 9-5 occupation. Even the most successful beauties such as Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn have to work evenings and weekends without taking a day off after 5 days.

It is important to be flexible and take work when it appears, which will usually not run in a organised schedule. Therefore, it is important to be prepared at a moments notice and flexible to avoid saying no too regularly. Making connections and a great first impression will allow for models to secure reoccurring work with the same employees, which will make the uncertainty less intimidating and worrying.

Models are required to work long shifts with early starts and late finishes. It is hard work and requires individuals who have stamina. Roles are demanding and the need for models to remain strong and deliver on the day is high.

Sleep deprivation can make it difficult to function yet eating well and exercising regularly will help to keep your energy levels up. Also, the more experience of rising early and finishing late will allow for your body to adjust and get used to these long hours. Therefore, do not be misled to believe that modelling is an easy career choice as it is far from the truth.

How to Deal with Rejection

Unfortunately the modelling industry is rife with rejection and sometimes harsh criticism yet it is important to remain positive to succeed. Take the comments as a tool to improve and do not focus on too much on the negative points.

Remember the remarks are delivered from that individual which will not be the opinion of all other experts in the industry. Persistence is key to continue with your career excepting every opportunity with enthusiasm and a smile.

Confidence Is Key

It is important to possess self assurance in your appearance and body to perform amazingly well at a shoot. The main factor that will build confidence is to exercise regularly and eat healthily. By creating a toned physique and ensuring that you consume nutritious foods washed down with water will have a positive impact on your self esteem and figure. Shy models do not usually succeed since working with new people is a regular occurrence.

female-model

How Tall Should a Female Model be?

High fashion demands girls of 5’9”-5’11”. Height is extremely important on the runway and in ad campaigns. However, the commercial industry works a little differently with slightly shorter models hired for photoshoots.

It does depend what niche you are working in as petite, fitness and glamour modelling is not so focused on height.

How Much Do Female Models Make?

Fashion is one of the few industries where male models do not earn as much as women. It has been reported that men earn 75% less than a woman due to the female fashion industry bringing in such a higher revenue overall.

Rates of pay can vary with high profile models earning significantly more than an emerging model. Also, campaign shoots offer a higher sum than catwalk shows, which can result in working a lot of hours for very little.

Watch out for either being paid in clothes, agencies taking a large percentage, expenses to cover and working for free. Make sure you are aware of the terms before signing the contract. Initially, you may need the experience but there does become a cut off point where payment is needed.

Since, most models would rather cash for their time as the designer dress excitement will start to fade. The Insta-it-list do still need to pay their bills and eat while looking fabulous.

Head over to our blog post where we delve deeper into a models earnings further.

Who Are the Top Female Models of the Moment?

Fashion is fleeting with girls stepping in and out of the limelight. Some are lucky to remain current season after season yet others fall prey to the fickleness of the industry. New faces constantly emerge to keep the scene new, fresh and exciting with model scouts always on the look out. Let’s take a look at the fashionable models of the moment.

Gigi Hadid

The beauty is everywhere! Her high profile relationship with Zayn Malik and her 35 million Instagram followers puts her in the spotlight. She’s the girl that everyone wants to be and has graced the cover of French, Italian, American and British Vogue.

Jasmine Tookes

The Victoria’s Secret Angel, Jasmine Tookes loves her role with the lingerie brand. She has worked extremely hard to get to this level. She loves to travel although she does miss her loved ones. From modelling their sports collection and fragrance, she is the gorgeous face of the brand.

Barbara Palvin

Discovered on the streets of Budapest in 2006, Hungarian model, Barbara Palvin is the face of L’Oreal Paris and advertises for Chanel. Her favourite thing about modelling is travel to different places, experience different cultures and people.

Taylor Hill

It seems she is the girl who loves to make people laugh, especially herself! Taylor became a Victoria’s Secret Angel last year, which has encouraged her to have her voice in the industry. Recently, she has modelled for Karl Lagerfeld alongside her sister, Mackinley.

So how much do models get paid? Supermodel Linda Evangelista was famously quoted as saying ’We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day’. Whilst it’s true that the most successful high fashion models can command huge sums of money for putting in an appearance on the catwalk or working as the face of designer clothing, beauty or accessory brands. However, for the majority of models the reality is often much lower.

How Much Do Models Get Paid?

Rates of pay can be hourly, daily or per campaign or photo shoot. Hourly rates can start at around £40 per hour, with day rates ranging from the low hundreds up to £1,000 or maybe even a lot more especially in high fashion. An average models salary is approximately £40,000-£50,000 per year.

There is a vast difference in model wages depending on your status and the niche your working in; some will even end up working for free in order to gain exposure in certain magazines or with high profile designers.

Child and teen models are likely to earn less than adults, largely due to legal restrictions on working hours. Parents will negotiate on their behalf. Child modelling does involve the parents consent and cooperation, which applies their wages and the costs required.

There are a variety of factors that will determine your earning potential as a model, and some things will be out of your control. As a fashion model you may be ‘hot property’ one week and simply be ‘out of style’ the next. Fortunately, other kinds of modelling work such as commercial and catalogue modelling can offer more stability, but the most common reasons your earnings will rise or fall will depend on the following:

Would you like to start earning money as a model? Register today, to take that first step in your career.

how-much-models-get-paid-per-shoot

How Often You Get Booked.

You may get booked for lower paying jobs on a regular basis, or strike lucky with a big pay cheque for one job and then not get booked again for several weeks or months. There is certainly no set formula or working pattern to the modelling industry. It demands a flexible character who can live with the unknown.

Whether You Work Freelance or Are Signed to an Agency.

As a freelance model you can negotiate your own fees or agree to work to specific client budget. If you are signed with an agency you will need to hand over a percentage of your pay in commission. Ensure that you are aware of all costs before you sign the contract and accept the role.

The Section of the Industry You Are Working In.

Some modelling jobs benefit from having fewer criteria and could offer increased chances of securing regular work. Catalogue and commercial models may find it easier to secure regular work whereas the high fashion industry is more fickle.

Whether or Not You Are Professional and Easy to Work With.

how-much-models-get-paid-per-shoot

Getting booked for a job is a good start, however successful models could be invited back to work with the same clients on a regular basis if they develop a reputation for being reliable and easy-going.

Male Model Discrimination.

Male models tend to earn less than their female counterparts, though there is increasing demand for men in the industry. Female models receive a huge 148% more than male models with women earning £40,ooo per year and men making £24,000; a shocking discovery that is completely unfair when carrying out the same role.

Although the amount of male models is high their pay is considerably less than the opposite sex; a very different scenario than other industries where women are discriminated against due to their gender.

The reason behind the injustice is that the female clothing industry brings in such a higher revenue than male fashion. Yet, as gents become more style conscious the market is changing. Here’s to a future where equality is achieved and both genders are valued for their work.

Elizabeth Rose who manages male models at Premier states: [ctt template=”3″ link=”87iR5″ via=”yes” ]“I think it’s the only industry where men get paid less than women. It’s unfair (and) I wouldn’t say it’s female empowerment at all.” @UKModelslondon[/ctt]

The Cost of Being a Model.

how-much-models-get-paid-per-shoot

It is important to remember that your earnings will not only be defined by your rate of pay. Expenses such as travel, accommodation, food, agency fees and portfolio costs are just some of the things you will need to budget for and will be deducted from your pay cheque if you are signed to an agency.

It has been reported that many models actual wage after the expenses have been subtracted end up with very little for their days work. The excitement, eagerness and large pound signs for the opportunity takes over and instinct immediately kicks in. Many agree to a role that in fact, is much less than minimum wage.

A trip to New York, the model apartment, taxi’s to the location and food on set has to come out of someone’s pocket and usually it is the models. Ridiculous stories of clients Christmas presents and flowers for the actual models birthday have been deducted from their wage. It is essential that you remain in control of your own fate and ask questions before you naively board the plane.

Prior to signing a contract with an agency or client ensure that you read and understand every section especially the expenses information. If unsure ask to truly gauge what you are paying for as £1000 could minimise to £200 or zero if you are not careful.

Freelance Models.

If you are freelance you will need to meet these costs up front and may not be able to charge them on to your client. Again, get the full information before you agree to the opportunity. As a freelance model, it is essential to calculate your own tax declaring yourself self employed. Remember to save a portion of your earnings to pay the lump sum by the deadline or you may be fined heavily.

Agencies Under Scrutiny.

how-much-models-get-paid-per-shoot

Signing with the correct modelling agency is essential as unfortunately many agencies will exploit young models desperation and innocence. It is important that the modelling agency that you sign with our working with you and supporting your career ensuring that you get paid on time and only deduct the agreed amount. It is known that some unforeseen and weird charges can appear on the statement that were most likely in the small print of the contract.

Also, if a model annoys the agency by asking for their money it can prevent the hopeful from securing more jobs. It is very bad practice and it is vital that you find an establishment that values your talent, pays you on time and has your best interests at heart. Modelling agencies that are set out just to make a profit may be distrustful and untruthful; delaying payments, adding expenses and lying to models is too common. There are friendly, reliable, kind agencies in the industry, it is up to you to seek them out and to not be taken advantage of no matter how much you yearn for a model career.

Agencies that do not pay on time draw models in by offering advances. A service that results in debt as interest builds. It is not an advisable situation to be in yet many models have no other choice but to ask for the advance. Rather than using this service it may be more beneficial if you got a flexible part time job that can tide you over until the model work is available.

Working For Free.

Many brands, designers and clients may expect you to work for free – even the top designers. Voluntary work can be great to gain exposure and experience to begin with yet there has to be a cut off point. If an opportunity benefits your career and may lead to paid work later down the line then go for it. However, if you feel as though the company is beginning to take advantage of your good nature politely walk away.

Paid in Clothes.

It is also common for designers to pay models in clothes or a voucher to spend in store. To begin with the idea of wearing glamorous, expensive clothing is enticing yet when the electricity bill can’t be paid, it is not a laughing matter. This is called trade on your pay slip, which in some cases can be in edition to a payment; a much more desirable option. Again, if the opportunity will enhance your career then accept the offer initially. Yet you will have to rethink if this is repeated each time.

Insta-models.

Models are turning to the social media platform to boost their earnings and exposure as a model. Those who build a large following will be approached by brands to either appear in their campaign or to promote a product via the platform. Either way Instagram is a new way to earn more money. The fast moving, contemporary world heavily relies upon social media. A model has supposedly claimed that one selfie paid more than FOUR days of work; the industry is completely changing due to online sources. The internet allows for fans to gain a personal more instant view of a models life.

However, creating a hugely, successful Instagram account takes dedication and commitment. Posting regularly with the relevant hashtags and interesting content will hopefully gain followers. Treat your profile as an online portfolio with a touch of personal content too. Include behind the scenes footage, selfies, travel etc so that fans can invest in your model lifestyle.  If you put in the work, you will see the reward in the form of more modelling jobs.

Catwalk Vs Photoshoots.

Surprisingly, there is a huge difference between the amount models get paid for catwalk shows at London Fashion Week to featuring in ad campaigns. The runway offers little money for emerging models who end up working extremely hard for not much cash. Hopefuls who get their big break gracing the catwalk for the top names do not earn very much at all. For 48 shows, Molly Blair earned just £1,700. However, the well known models that are in the public eye such as Gisele Bundchen will of course, receive a much, much higher amount. If hired for a designer campaign there is a lot more money available. With the brand benefiting from the investment the model will be paid a lot more.

how-much-do-models-get-paid-per-shoot

It is an eye opener to understand that such elaborate, elite events that are a focal point in the fashion diary do not have the funding to pay models appropriately. Fashion show costs are extremely high with every brand trying to outshine their rivals. Therefore, if they can get away with paying models menial amounts they will to use the money elsewhere.

Modelling tips help hopefuls realise their dream by steering their focus in the correct direction. Many feel clueless when entering the competitive industry and seek guidance on the moves to make. Aspiring models should absorb all the modelling tips and resources available to position themselves in a good place.

Indulge in our top modelling tips to inspire you to make the right moves when starting your journey into the industry.

High Quality Photographs

Always aim for quality in regard to your photographs. Never accept a mediocre or amateur standard as these shots represent you as a model. Ensure that you are proud of your work before adding to your portfolio to induce confidence.

modelling tips

Perfect your Craft

No one is instantly perfect at posing or walking the catwalk without a stumble. It takes experience and practice to perfect your posing technique or model strut. Do not worry if it doesn’t come naturally test out poses in front of a mirror or friend until you are satisfied.

Location

Think about where you are based. Do you have opportunities nearby to pursue? Your location is very important as large vibrant cities naturally breed a fashion community rather than small towns or villages. If you choose to live away from the city ensure that the capital or other cities are commutable.

Remain Positive

It is vital to be upbeat, enthusiasm and energy even when rejection constantly rears its ugly head. All models will experience criticism and knock backs as it is very much apart of the modelling industry. Those who can pick themselves up time and time again will survive.

Believe in Yourself

Confidence is an absolute must. A shy, timid character will not feel comfortable constantly working with new people, posing in front of a camera or walking out to an audience. Those who possess the self assurance will succeed by believing in their talent.

Trust No-one

Unfortunately, the competitive nature of the industry usually means that other models are your rivals. Initially, it is wise to not trust your competitors as it will be difficult to gauge if they are sincere and honest. After a while you will be able to make friends when you are more acquainted with individuals.

Do Not Give Up

Try no to quit at the first hurdle as you will end up full of regret. Give it your best shot and keep going as simply giving up is not the answer. Take some time to absorb the knock back and continue with confidence. Remember it is a difficult industry to break into so proceed steadily with dedication and commitment.

modelling tips

Attend Castings

Castings are a natural part of a models life. Attend as many as possible to guarantee success. Many will be unsuccessful whereas others will be fruitful so hang on in there. Arrive promptly and be prepare to wait your turn. A models daily routine will involve a lot of hanging around waiting for the make-up artist, photographer, designer etc. Take a book or listen to music to pass the time.

Be a model in London today! Why not? What’s stopping you? Fear? Nerves? Relocating to the big smoke is an important decision that needs to be well thought out and considered – don’t get me wrong. But if modelling in the capital is your big career dream then don’t hide behind fear as an easy escape route. Know what you are getting into and make a plan.

Alternatively, if you already inhabit the city yet have not worked up the courage to begin your model journey the same applies. Begin. Now. If you don’t try then you will never know. Take a look at the realities of modelling to see whether you actually have what it takes to succeed.

Let us help! Simply register here to start your modelling career in London.

It’s Harder Than It Looks

Modelling demands a lot of hard work. Long hours, early starts and late finishes are a regularity. Delivering the perfect pose takes body awareness and confidence that is difficult to portray as a new model. It is fiercely competitive and difficult to get your first break. Hard work, persistence and perseverance are qualities that the industry demands.

Get Signed to a Model Agency

A modelling agency is the perfect way for fashion models to find work in London. It might take some time to find a modelling agency but be persistent. Successful models do not hang around waiting for agents to scout them. They reach out by completing application forms or going to walk-ins to ensure that they are chasing their dream. Agents are always looking for new faces and yours could be just what they’re searching for.

There Is a Lot of Waiting Around

On modelling jobs such as photoshoots and catwalk shows there is a lot of waiting around. Whether you are waiting to get your make-up applied, hair styled or for the photographer to set up you must be patient. Take a book or magazine to read to fill the time as you probably won’t be going anywhere fast. If you are booked for a couple of shows per day at New York Fashion Week for example (yes, London models do travel) there will be super hectic moments followed by calm.

It’s Not 9-5

The modelling industry doesn’t work on a set routine like other full time jobs. It demands flexibility and an easy going attitude. Female and male models constantly have to work towards your next role by attending a lot of castings. Only supermodels who work for Vogue, Elle Magazine  or Chanel can guarantee regular work. The reality for commercial models is that you have to go out and grab that next opportunity each time.

be-a-model-in-london

London Is Expensive

Rent, bills, food – the list is endless – all add up. Living in the capital will not be easy due to the expense. Plan ahead and save some money before you move to make the transition as smooth as possible. Enquire whether your friends have a spare room and never move to the city on a whim as the careless attitude will cut your modelling career short.

Build a Thick Skin

Rejection is rife in the industry so ensure that you are ready. It is not easy to be constantly turned down yet at first expect a lot of rejection. Building a confident, thick skin is necessary to avoid being swallowed by the industry.

You Don’t Always Get Paid

Unfortunately, new models need experience and therefore, may need to accept unpaid work. Balance this around another job to ensure that you can afford your rent and bills. It will be a hectic, exhausting time yet will bring you closer to your end goal. Do not get taken advantage of. Assess the situation and whether the opportunity is worth it.

You don’t get to keep the clothes

The glamorous, beautiful clothes that you will get to model usually go straight back to the designer. Again, only supermodels like Kate Moss and influencers get the freebies with a social media account full of followers to impress! At least you will get to pretend they’re yours for a couple of hours though.

What it takes to be a model is analysed by thousands of hopefuls striving to carve a successful career in the industry. Castings, castings and yes, more castings are what it takes to be a model! It’s true. If you do not have the patience, drive and persistence to continually attend model auditions, the likelihood of success is extremely low. Designers and brands such as Stella McCartney, Dior and Chloe regularly host castings to source talent suitable for their show. It is the perfect way to locate potential and for emerging models to begin their journey. It is not an easy process yet models are required to attend as many as possible to literally get their face seen.

Walk

Designers will be looking for a confident and controlled walk. You will be dismissed instantly if your strut is not to a high standard. Practice, practice, practice – and practice some more to ensure that your model walk is perfected. A fierce, strong strut with your head held high will demonstrate your self assurance in your talent. Do not fade into the background with a timid, shy walk. Stand out from the crowd.

Vibe

Your attitude and personality is also very important. A cool, happy vibe is desired as designers will respond to your presence and hire you. Enthusiasm and energy is vital to your success showing the organisers the attitude you will bring to the catwalk show or photoshoot. Let’s face it no one wants to work with a frowning, moody model all day.

Patience

Castings involve a lot of waiting around until it is your turn to deliver. Keep yourself occupied and upbeat by preparing fully. Bring a book/mag, listen to music or practice to avoid becoming frustrated. Also, pack water and a snack in case you begin to feel hungry as fainting in the middle of your audition is not ideal.

Fun

Remember to have fun and embrace the opportunity. Balance your emotions to ensure that you take the casting seriously yet also enjoy the experience. Coming across worried and concerned all the time will not help your chance. Show the designers your passion and love of modelling through a happy, enthusiastic demeanour.

do-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-a-model

Judgement

There is no getting around the fact that you will be judged on the day. Yet, try to not become too focused on this aspect as it will drive you crazy. If you do not get the casting accept that this opportunity wasn’t right for you and move on to the next one. The designers will of course evaluate your suitability for the role as this is the whole point of the casting.

Nerves

With experience you will learn to control your nerves. It is natural to feel anxious as your turn approaches yet try to turn this nervous energy into confidence. Believe in yourself and your talent to avoid the nerves taking over and hindering your performance. The more castings you attend the more you will be able to embrace the nerves. It is a natural feeling that every model experiences yet has to overcome in time.

So. Do you have what it takes to be a model? Can you stomach the amount of castings you will ultimately have to attend?

Take Each Day as It Comes

Try not to let your mind runaway into a world of worry, negativity and uncertainty. Each day is a new start, as they say so truly believe this mantra. Wake up looking forward to the day ahead and what you will achieve rather than reliving the past. Ask yourself – what are you going to do today to achieve your dream? How many applications will you fill out to help you to sign up to be a model.

I am a self confessed worrier and in the past could easily work myself into a frenzy putting myself down in the process. I have learnt how to stop over obsessing by taking each day in my stride working hard to achieve my goal.

Set a Goal

Make your mission to sign up to be a model to be a structured operation to avoid becoming overwhelmed by all the possibilities. Write a list to organise your time efficiently yet be realistic. Aim to work towards your goal a little each day to break it down into manageable chunks. This may be filling out applications, researching potential opportunities or enquiring about a course. Once ticked off the list you will feel much better about the situation and the progress you have made.

Each week I write a list of what I need to achieve stating each task no matter how small. When I have completed the requirement I scribble out the point. It makes me feel a whole lot better about the work I have to achieve that week.

Approach Model Agencies

To make it in the industry you need to be signed to a modelling agency. Whether you live in London, New York or Hong Kong, male and female models should research agencies online to find out their application process and walk in times. After completing your name, date of birth, contact information and statistics, you will then be asked to attach a headshot and body shot or a selection of professional pictures depending on the agency. If you decide that you would like to meet the agents face to face make sure you check the times that they are open to models. Remember agencies are always on the look out for new faces yet you must be the right fit for them.

Don’t Give Up

At times the process involved for aspiring models can be infuriating, upsetting and long winded yet it is the nature of life and the profession. Remember you only get out what you put in. Persistence and hard work will be rewarded eventually so don’t give into rejection and silence.

Over the years I have applied for countless jobs. Some I have heard back from where others I haven’t. The modelling world is a difficult world to enter yet with time professionals will give you a chance and allow for you to build experience by witnessing your talent. Unfortunately, some are too busy to see your potential. However, stay strong as, trust me, your time will come with acceptance and persistence.
