A child modelling agency represents children and young people who want to model. If your little one dreams of being a model, or you’ve simply been told by a lot of people that they’d be great for the job, then it can be quite daunting to know how to go about finding one. When looking for a child modelling agency, you want to appear professional at all times, and showcase your child in the best possible light. So, here are a few pointers!

The Realities Of A Child Modelling Agency

Every single child modelling agency will receive hundreds (maybe even thousands) of applications on a regular basis. They can become tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. It sounds harsh, but just because your child is your little darling, it doesn’t mean that the a top child modelling agency will agree. It may sound ruthless, but that’s their job to be honest.

If your child is cute, it’s likely that they’ll find work of some description. However, you need to start small, and then let the bigger jobs come in with experience!

Tips To Catch The Eye Of A Child Modelling Agency

children modeling agencies

If an agency is going to invest in your child or teen, they’ll need to see the following:

  • Potential. Nobody is going to go out on a limb for a child who doesn’t exhibit potential in a range of areas.
  • That the child is photogenic. You should present them with a range of portfolio shots, ideally professionally taken.
  • Your ability to work with them easily. Read submission instructions carefully. You only have one chance to make a first impression. Make sure you do what they ask; and make yours count.
  • Attitude – both yours and that of your child. If you’re first starting out, leave the diva behaviour at the door.
  • That the child wants to model. Some parents sadly force modelling on their children. Modelling agencies can spot this from a mile off, and it usually isn’t worth the risk for them!

Have you had any dealings with a child modelling agency? Can you think of any tips we haven’t covered?

Child modelling North West is a search that parents who live in the region will type. It is a realistic query to enter as many who live in the north of England do not want to relocate their whole family to London to pursue their child’s dream of becoming a model. Luckily, the North West features many large, diverse cities such as Manchester and Liverpool that support the modelling industry. There are in fact, quite a few established child model agencies operating from these cities due to the demand in this British region. Of course, there are not as many that populate the capital but those residing in the northern cities will vouch that the organisations are professional and successful despite their location.

Before upheaving your family to a new destination it is worthwhile trying out those closer to home. As a parent you will have a huge role to play in your child’s modelling career and therefore, a nearer agency will help you with the expense and commute that could threaten to take over your life. Birmingham is also a possibility with a shorter distance than London and therefore, it is time to explore your options. Research your surrounding area to uncover what opportunities there are to offer nearby. The internet is a great source but also visit the establishments to gain a good feel for their suitability. It is a daunting prospect allowing your daughter or son to enter the industry yet with all the information you will feel much more prepared for the transition. Comfort will also come from supporting a local modelling agency to avoid the busy lifestyle of the capital.

Manchester and Liverpool are vibrant cities that are constantly developing their status in the fashion industry. Smaller cities (in comparison to London) are competing with the big smoke and hosting fashion weeks, designer brands and head offices. The shift in focus allows for the cities to accommodate agencies and allows for the business to grow in the northern cities. Of course, there will still be travelling to commit to with castings and roles being held in various places yet your base will remain without having to move. This is an important point to consider as other children, jobs and house prices need to be seriously thought about. It is unfair to move kids out of schools, sell your house and change your job for a potential model dream. Make use of the facilities nearby and if the time comes for a move to London it will be a considered, careful decision rather than rushed. Take advantage of the entrepreneurs who are fighting for the fashion industry to be existent outside of London and for northern talent to shine in a competitive industry.

Child modelling north west is a reality that is continually being developed and progressing in cities that welcome creative, forward thinking and moving with the contemporary times. Have you had a positive experience of modelling in the northern region? We would love to hear about your experience to inspire others in a similar situation.

Infant modelling is more commonly known as child modelling in the industry. It is a necessary niche in the modelling world that is taken very seriously and requires dedication, commitment and hard work from both children and parents. The industry welcomes infants yet demands for maturity and professionalism at quite an early age. Some leniency is given due to the young age of the models yet schedules and itineraries are expected to be met without major delays, which could cost extra money. Do you think your child has the ability, personality and character to make it in the infant modelling world? Lets take a look…………

shutterstock_327125348

Monitor your child and assess how they react to new people and different environments. The modelling industry presents situations that could be intimidating and daunting for children. At a photoshoot or catwalk show there will be a team of individuals that are new and it is important that your child feels relaxed and confident in this environment. A child model will be expected to pose alone or with fellow kids in front of a camera, which for shy and timid characters will be extremely difficult. However, outgoing and sociable children will find delivering a great performance in front of new people much easier.

shutterstock_273501797

Remember that as their parent you will be expected to be present at all times to support and guide. Your child will feel comfortable and reassured with your presence and you will be in viewing distance whilst the shoot is taking place. Being the parent or guardian of a child model is hard work and will encroach on a lot of your time. Arranging potential castings, driving to auditions and attending the photoshoot or show will demand dedication, organisation and passion from mum or dad. Therefore, you have to be certain that you have the time and commitment to offer such a role as the career choice demands a lot of responsibility from the parents.

shutterstock_184616174

Children are unable to make decisions for themselves in the industry without their parents consent. It is a legal requirement that the industry demand so that children remain safe at all times. As a parent you will be asked to sign a document to allow your son or daughter to model for the company. If an agency or establishment do not present a consent contract then please do not proceed with the role. This safety precaution is put in place to allow for you to decide the suitability of the role for your child as due to their innocence and lack of experience they are unequipped to make these important decisions for themselves. As their parent it is your responsibility to make these choices for them and to act with maturity and caution. The good news is that there are many trustworthy establishments who wish to hire children to model for legit clothing companies such as H&M, Next and M&S. Children will promote the clothing by showing the fit and fall of items on the body and when moving each season. High street brands rely on child models to promote their latest range.

Kids modelling can be somewhat of a conundrum! On the one hand, they’re adorable. On the other… kids modelling can be a total logistical nightmare!

Kids will be kids, and it’s in their nature to be so. When you were little you were most likely the same, and unlike adults in modelling, a lot of the time children do not grasp that it is a job where money is being exchanged. Most children don’t work, and in the case of kids modelling, it’s not really the every day norm. So, how do you keep the children well-behaved on a shoot as their guardian?

kids-modelling

  • Always explain to your child exactly what is going on and what will be expected of them. Sure, kids modelling are too young to make decisions for themselves, but they do have a right to have a say. You should never force them to do something they don’t want to, and try to explain it in a way that they’ll understand.
  • When it comes to kids modelling, be patient. An adult on the job appreciates when to listen, when to take direction and so on, but for a child, they simply might not feel like it. Work with the professionals on the shoot to try and make the process more cohesive. Gently talk to your child and put simple instructions into terminology they respect. As your child is likely to respect you more than a stranger, it’s one of the many benefits of having to have a parent present in kids modelling!
  • Bring snacks to keep them going on a long day. When kids are hungry, they’re hungry. You know how it is – when you’re hungry, you can’t focus on the task in hand. Your child’s health and nutrition is also a lot more important than their weight at this stage, so always ensure that you’re imparting healthy attitudes towards food into them. There’s no space for negativity when it comes to kids modelling.
  • Bring plenty of things to keep your child entertained during the inevitable long waits on shoots. Their favourite toys, familiar items, books… anything to keep them stimulated, but nothing too loud as they need to stay calm and as professional as possible.
  • Finally, keep your child happy. Your child comes before the lucrative career of kids modelling, even if you’re encouraging them for their future. The second it gets too much or interferes with other aspects of their life is the second that you should listen to their needs and revisit the idea in future at a more suitable time if they want to.

Are your kids modelling? How are you finding it as a family?

Teenage boy models may not be as common as teenage girl models, but they still have a huge place in the modelling industry. Fashion for teenage boy models may not traditionally be as interesting to them as with their female counterparts, however, as our attitudes to gender change, more and more men are embracing the fashion world. Whether our attitudes are becoming more inclusive, or we simply acknowledge that boys also want to look good in clothes, there is a definite need for teenage boy models!

Perhaps your son is interested, has been approached, or already does shoots? Teenage boy models face pressures just like the girls. We produced a similar guide for girls already, but when it comes to teenage boy models, we’ve got some advice for you – and him – right here!

teenage-boy-models

Self Worth Is Important

Hey, boys have issues with self-esteem as well, and modelling can add pressures onto them at a time when they’re feeling self-conscious. Teenage boy models don’t just have to worry about how they look in front of their peers and girls, they’re worrying about how their looks will affect their career. It’s a lot to think about! Boys handle their issues with the way they look differently to girls, and they’re concerned about things like their physique in a different manner. Of course it’s important for teenage boy models to have a certain aesthetic, but you must not let them believe that they’re only the sum of their looks. They have more to offer, so build up their confidence!

There Will Be Rejection

Rejection can be brutal for a young man, who often will not open up about the way that they feel and talk about problems. Teenage boy models will often be exactly the same, so it’s important that you keep an eye out for any of the symptoms of not coping, particularly after any form of rejection at a casting.

Of course, it’s important for teenage boy models to know that they’re not a failure – they might not be what the client is looking for at that particular time, but it doesn’t mean they’re bad at what they do! Even top models get rejected sometimes, so teenage boy models are no exception!

Sometimes There Is No Constructive Feedback

Didn’t make the team? Failed an exam? Your son will usually be told why. In the modelling world, sadly this isn’t typically the case. He may be told he doesn’t have ‘the look’, but that’s just the luck of the draw. Teenage boy models don’t always have to change something, they just have to be in the right place at the right time. Keep up his focus on his dream by offering encouragement. Keep an eye on popular men’s fashion blogs to keep everything from his hair to his style ahead of the trends.

Some Kids Might Have Nasty Words To Say

Let’s get one thing straight (no pun intended): not all teenage boy models are gay. Some are, some aren’t, just like any other kid of work. Kids are particularly nasty and although attitudes are again changing, homophobia and lack of understanding can still exist, despite there being no real correlation. It’s prejudice, and it’s not acceptable: make sure he knows!

Other kids might be jealous because teenage boy models can get a lot of attention from girls! Other boys may feel like they have to vie for attention and as a result, be cruel about it. This isn’t a representation on your son, it’s about other people’s insecurities.

Don’t Neglect Studies Or Other Passions

Modelling can be cut throat, and this is true for teenage boy models, too. They need something else to focus on for the times when things aren’t quite working out, and to help them keep a healthy balance. Make sure that they’re not just utilising tunnel vision – a more well-rounded person will ultimately have better focus, too.

Modelling Should Be Fun!

Don’t ever force your son into being a teenage boy model; but don’t try and stop him without good reason, either. Talk to him regularly and ensure it’s still what he wants. He can stop at any time (contract providing), but make sure he knows you’re there for him throughout.

Teenage modelling agencies are available to locate work for adolescents aged between 12-17. During this age young individuals seek independence and try to rebel against their concerned parents or guardians. It is wise for mothers and fathers to listen to their daughter or sons wishes to pursue a modelling career rather than try to discourage their dream. By acting in a negative and unsupportive way could lead your teenager into danger as they try to pursue their passion alone. It is normal to be wary and cautious yet by seeking advice you and your child will embrace the journey together.

Teenage Modelling Agencies

Research…….

Investigate further into teenage modelling agencies to locate an organisation that suits you and your teenagers requirements. Look out for those that work with reputable clients and have signed models that are of a similar age to your teenager. There will be agencies that specialise in teen modelling therefore, ensure that your chosen establishment does. When making contact ask as many questions as possible for reassurance and if an opportunity arises to find a recommendation then follow up on the lead. Without the wisdom that matures with age and experience your teen may select an modelling agency which does not act appropriately.

Chaperone……

To demonstrate support and to put your mind at ease ensure that you chaperone your teen at all castings and modelling roles. Your daughter or son will feel confident with your presence and will arrive at the correct location. Providing transport to and from a shoot and chaperoning on the day will ensure that your child is safe at all times. It is essential that you receive all the requirements for the casting through your chosen agency to be prepared for the task ahead.

Teenage Modelling Agencies

Stability…….

The demands of the industry will be explained by your modelling agency describing the competitive nature of individuals and hard work required. It is important that as a parent you are honest with your child about what is required of them throughout each stage. Missing school (legally) and being committed to their dream is essential to succeed. It is vital that you provide a positive and happy environment to eliminate stress and to ensure that each experience is enjoyable. Juggling all commitments including your own duties can be tough yet with a realistic perception and a positive attitude both you and your teen will be happy.

Consent Forms……

It is reassuring to discover that an agency requires a parents consent for all models under 18. Therefore, your teen cannot rebel and proceed with a shoot if you do not deem the role appropriate and suitable. Upon receiving the document it is important that you fully understand each stated point before signing. If you are confused about the written document please ask for an explanation from your modelling agency to ensure that the organisation is acting accordingly. Once the contract is signed your teen has your permission to go ahead with the shoot.

It is understandable that many parents have doubts about the modelling industry and their teen’s ambitions. However, by supporting their dreams and following the necessary steps their cautious attitude will provide reassurance. An established modelling agency will provide work for your teen that is safe and will benefit your adolescents career.

All kids are cute, but if you are wondering if your child has that special something to become a child model then you will want to make sure you know all about the industry. After all, it’s not just your child who will be involved in modelling. As a parent or guardian your participation is not just a legal requirement, it is also crucial to help ensure your child enjoys their time in front of the camera at a photoshoot.

Would you like your child to become a model? Register here to see if your son or daughter has what it takes!

Here are our answers to some common questions asked by parents of child models:

Does My Child Have Potential?

Becoming a successful child model often requires more than just a pretty face. Depending on their age, your child will also need to have a bubbly personality and demonstrate that they can follow instruction well at a  photoshoot. They are likely to be working with adults and children they don’t know so being able to interact well with strangers is an advantage. A well supported confident, happy child should usually cope well with the demands of modelling work.

How Do I Find a Reputable Agent?

UK Models can help you find good quality child modelling agencies and help answer your questions about the industry. We can also give you a good idea of what a child model agency will expect of you and your little one.

Modelling agencies that specialise in child modelling will help your kid find work in the industry. You can look online to find child modelling agencies. However, make sure that they are reputable and trustworthy before signing a contract.

Will I Have to Take Photographs of My Child?

Initially you will need a selection of professional photos that show your child’s facial features clearly and captures a sense of his or her personality. UK Models can help you create a collection of natural images suitable for sending to agencies and casting directors. However, we would not recommend investing in a professional portfolio for baby models and children aged 3 years and under due to the rapid growth and changes in this age group.

child-modeling

What Is a Casting?

Modelling agencies and their clients will often hold castings to audition models. These will usually take place at their offices or a professional studio and can involve lots of waiting around. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to bring books, toys or your iPad to entertain your son or daughter. The agent or client may want to take head shots of your child. This should not happen without your consent and supervision.

To carve a modelling career for your little one, castings are a part of the process. It may feel daunting at first yet over time you and your child will get used to the process. Big brands such as John Lewis, Mothercare, Gap Kids and even Burberry hold castings to find child models for their promotional material. It is the perfect way to gauge a child’s suitability for the modelling job.

What Kind of Modelling Work Will My Child Do?

There are a wide range of opportunities for children with common assignments including catalogue, internet and brochure campaigns as well as TV ads and TV commercials. A lot of the work is seasonal with summer, autumn and Christmas campaigns being shot well in advance. Big brands are super organised with promotional material planned a season ahead. The modelling jobs are quite varied with many being held in big cities such as London and Manchester. Therefore, if you live in the beautiful mountains of Wales for example, you will have to travel excessively or have a base nearer the city.

child-modeling

How Much Will My Child Earn?

Regardless of age, there are lots of factors that determine a model’s earning potential. Some children may earn a few hundred pounds a year whilst others will receive more regular assignments and earn more. It is not a profession with regular income and hours. However, whilst you should expect for your child to be paid for their work, money should not be your main motivation. Child modelling offers an opportunity for you and your child to have fun together and capture images of them as a keepsake of their childhood. That is priceless. At this young age, it is wise to view it as a hobby rather than a job.

What About School Life?

Modelling assignments can be held at any time of year so it is likely that your child may have to miss time from school. In order to take your child out of education to attend castings and jobs you will need to obtain a licence from your local council so that the school can permit the absence. UK Models can help you understand the paperwork required for your child.
