Plus size male models are rarely discussed when we talk about plus size modelling, and when it comes to the conversation about modelling as a whole, they rarely get a look in! However, all that may well be about to change!

Is There A Plus Size Male Models Agency?

In March of this year, Zach Miko became the first of hopefully many plus size male models to join a top international modelling agency. Joining the ranks of Gigi Hadid and Lara Stone, he is now represented by IMG. This isn’t part of a plus size division, it’s simply just that he’s been added to their books.

Earlier in May 2016, London agency Bridge added a plus size section. They signed Ben Whit, who is a Personal Trainer and gardener.

Germany leads the way with plus size male models – it already has three agencies dedicated solely to this classification of men!

Who Are The Plus Size Male Models?

Plus size male models themselves are keen to point out that there’s no “one size fits all” approach to this category, however, the plus size male models who’ve already been signed tend to have a few things in common! They tend to be taller, and setting the standard as “brawny”. They’re broad, and tend to be larger not because of a few extra pounds, but instead because they’re actually incredibly muscular.

A lot of men who work out a lot are medically classed as ‘obese’ because of the BMI scale. This simply isn’t true and is one of the flaws of the system. The muscle weight of rugby players, for example, puts them as obese, and doesn’t take into account the fact that they’re healthy and that exercise actually made them that way! Charlotte Griffiths, of Bridge agency where Ben Whit is signed, said that the fact Ben is bigger because he’s muscular fits their overall ethos of promoting good health. They see his active lifestyle and job choices outside of the modelling world as a bonus. He’s also 6’1, which helps in this respect.

Is This As Progressive As It Seems?

Having plus size male models is a step in the right direction, as is any move to diversify. However, this move arguably will not help men with body image issues, because it simply shifts the focus from one desired look to another. Not everyone is larger because their muscles bring their BMI and size up; some people are simply carrying more body fat, which isn’t being represented.

Do you think the modelling world has an obligation to include all shapes and sizes? Let us know in the comments!

Plus size modelling poses are usually lean and sleek due to confidence, body awareness and an excellent posture. Many avoid causing any rippling or unflattering poses as the fashion industry demands to witness perfection. Therefore, well rehearsed positions are adopted with a straight posture, shoulders rolled back and head held high to proportion the body in the correct way.

However, have you seen Amy Schumer’s pose for the new Pirelli Calendar? She certainly didn’t follow any rules and guidelines allowing for the world to see her natural self!!! Shocked? So are we!!!!!

The Pirelli Calendar typically opts for supermodels wearing very little to create striking, provocative artistry. However, the 2016 version takes a new direction finding inspiration in strong women who – wait for it – are mostly fully clothed!!! It is a celebration of women’s achievements, intelligence and voice – the concept that women should be defined for more than their body shapes; deserve more than to pose for a calendar to be ogled at by the male gender. Photographer Annie Leibovitz, captures athlete Serena Williams (April), artist Patti Smith (November) and writer Tavi Gevinson (August) – to name a few – following a brief to provide ‘something different.’ She certainly did!!!

Following the brief to not ‘look like they tried in these pictures.’ Amy Schumer perches on a stool with a Starbuck’s in hand wearing nothing but a pair of lace knickers, strappy high heels and a look on her face that suggests ‘ready yet?’ Her blasé attitude was adopted to her body too as she openly shows how naturally the torso sits when hunched ever so slightly; a realistic interpretation that women can relate to rather than a forced pose. Don’t you think? The comedian purposely chose to take off her clothes as an ironic gesture yet grasped the concept perfectly understanding the idea behind the calendar. Leibovitz initially was worried for Amy asking ‘Are you self-conscious?’ Her reply was the perfect response and an attitude that should be adopted by more women across the globe ‘Are you kidding? I love my body.’ Amy is trying to demonstrate that no ones body is perfect as the fashion images lead us to believe and if almost anyone chooses to sit in a natural position the body will move accordingly.

Amy continues to tweet: “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman. Thank you.” – a series of words that individuals may use to describe her body. Amy realises how others may view her physique but her perception of herself is the most important. It is her way of helping others feel more comfortable and secure in their bodies. She doesn’t typically have the figure of a ‘supermodel’ and is not forcing her physique to look perfect yet her body is beautiful, feminine and sexy as she reveals her natural self.

Do you think Amy’s approach to the Pirelli Calendar will change the perception of plus size modelling poses? Maybe one day the label will be removed altogether and Amy’s slim, natural physique will be the norm in the modelling industry rather than segregated in a small niche.

Do you think that plus size modelling poses should be more natural and relaxed? Share if you wish to spread the word.

Plus size fashion models are securing contracts ensuring that the industry is more diverse. High street brands and fashion designers are approaching curvaceous models to front campaigns, which is an exciting time for the niche. However, what is the size range for plus size models? The issue has been attacked before claiming that size 12 models should not be deemed curvaceous yet simply a depiction of the average figure in society. Even size 16 models declare that the derogatory word ‘plus size’ should not apply to them. So, to clarify where does the niche begin and in this case, more importantly end? Is there a finish line that prevents certain sizes from modelling? A cut off point? Or are all figures accepted?

plus-size-fashion-models

Well, in Rosie Mercado’s case a size 34 is definitely not accepted as she had to loose 200Ibs shrinking down to a size 16 to revive her modelling career. The motivation was also sparked by being told that she had to buy two tickets on a flight as the aeroplane could not accommodate her size bringing her to tears. Let’s discuss Rosie Mercado’s journey further to define the size bracket of plus size modelling.

Complimented for her stunning face, high cheekbones and defined jawline, the model was accepted by many industry professionals who witnessed pictures that isolated her upper physique. Yet, when her lower body was revealed showing a 65 inch hip measurement the professionals would soon loose interest rapidly. The airline incident triggered for Rosie to loose the weight by signing up for a self help course and now models for the likes of Igigi and Ibbi World . Some may argue that the model should have been accepted for how she was without loosing weight yet others suggest that a size 34 is not a healthy representation for others to look to. Rosie admits that she used to eat unhealthily so began to substitute fast food for lean proteins, fruits and vegetables and an exercise regime, which has allowed for her to have a better quality of life for her and her children. She now has been signed to Manhattan-based True Model Management and has featured in campaigns for plus-size fashion companies.

Rosie explains: “It has not been the easiest journey, and I’ve had my ups and down. But, when I compare my quality of life to how it used to be, I know it was worth it.”

“When I was larger, I just wasn’t leading the lifestyle I wanted. Now I couldn’t be happier.”

It appears that there is an unwritten rule that for above a size 16-18 there is very little work for models. However, it is evident that the reason is due to the health factor, as a size 34 will project the wrong image to women as Rosie describes how previously she could not physically lead the life that she wanted due to her weight. Living a healthy lifestyle by eating a nutritious diet and exercising regularly is the main issue and as long as plus size fashion models (like all other models) adhere to a fitness regime and diet that works for them then size should not be a problem.

We believe that all models should focus on being fit and healthy rather than concentrating on their size. Plus size modelling should not be so defined by a size bracket but campaigning to ensure women love their bodies and feel happy and healthy! If you agree, help create awareness by sharing this article and make sure to use the hashtag #ukmodelslondon #plussizemodel #bodyawareness

Plus size modelling competitions are designed by brands and agencies who cater for curvaceous figures. The label such as SimplyBe is constantly seek new talent to front their campaigns and promote their clothing. Magazines join the search too launching their own competitions aimed at fuller figures and to spread awareness. One strategy to find potential models is to host plus size modelling competitions to expand their reach and locate aspiring hopefuls. The prize can range from a modelling contract to a feature in a magazine to a cash giveaway depending on the host. Many competitions aim to spread the awareness of voluptuous figures giving hope to those who dream to join the modelling industry.

plus size modelling competition

The rules of the competitions vary depending on those designing the strategy. Some may require for individuals to send in photographs, upload poses to social media along with a hashtag or attend an event where you may be asked to showcase your ability to model by taking to the runway. Check to see if you need to register for the modelling competition before entering, so ensure that you read all requirements carefully before proceeding. Avoid arriving at a competition without registering or failing to attach your contact details or photographs as this may jeopardise your chance. Remember these competitions are viewed and targeted worldwide and therefore, there will be a huge amount of rivals to compete against so ensure that your entry is perfect. Earlier this year, SLiNK – a plus size magazine – launched a competition to find the next ‘plus sizes supermodel’ with a generous prize to appear on the cover of the publication and in the fashion spread. As you can imagine the response was incredible and in the first week the magazine received 1,500 entries; surely a difficult task for the editors to choose one winner as the competition continued and spiralled.

plus size modelling competition

Rivkie Baum, Editor of SLiNK stated: “So many agencies and brands are moving into the plus size market it is a really exciting area to be operating in and we all feel that this competition and one that is opened up to such a varied size range is a really positive thing for the industry. The fact that the dress size range is so varied and open to women in so many countries means that this is one of the most open competitions in the modelling industry for a long time.”

She continued: “I hope it reminds women that there are opportunities in modelling at a range of sizes, size 6 and 8 isn’t the standard anymore, women can represent at a host of different sizes. We are so excited at the prospect of finding a global super star like the likes of Robyn Lawley or Candice Huffine.”

As a result the entrants were of an extremely high calibre as the women took the competition extremely seriously, which is the way to approach the reach out to new talent. Those who did not carefully think about how their image looked to a trained eye will have not been considered as a potential winner.

Keep a close look out for competitions released on fashion brand and magazine websites along with their social media platforms. It could be the beginning of your modelling career. Good luck!!!!

Plus Size Modelling Agencies Do Exist

The most productive way of entering the modelling industry as a curvy hopeful is via a plus size modelling agency. Their connections and links within the modelling field will significantly help your transition into the industry much easier. A model agency will have formed networks with brands such as Evans, Simply Be and Curvissa. However, it takes a lot of hard work to become signed to an agency as the competition is fierce and the amount of applicants is huge.

The agents who are in control of the selection process will decide very quickly whether a plus size model is successful or not. Therefore, a mistake cannot be made as this will go against you. First research the agencies that host plus size departments or specialise in the expansion of the plus size industry and locate the organisations that appear trustworthy. Do not rush this process as you do not to spend time being signed to an establishment that is ran by scam artists. Thorough research will prevent this from happening and ensure that your safety is not at risk. Secondly, find the application process and begin to fill out the necessary form taking your time to fill it out perfectly giving yourself the best chance possible.

how-to-be-a-curvy-model

The Application Process

The application will most likely ask for contact details, measurements and a series of images shot by a professional photographer. Using a shot from your modelling portfolio is a great idea! Some just like a headshot or body shot so make sure you check first. Ensure that you type your information in clearly and truthfully as a wrong email address may leave you uncontactable. Never lie giving false statistics as you will be found out eventually and ensure that the shots uploaded are professionally taken.

Take time over the form as it is the first impression that an agent will have of you. Trust us, you will you want it to be a good one. Be proud and confident that the application will win you a place at the agency.

Most plus size agencies also host walk in sessions. These allow for curve models to visit the establishment during a specific time slot to be evaluated. Check the website for the time frame available to avoid disappointment. Agencies are extremely busy. They will not have time to see you if you sporadically turn up at the wrong time. Be organised and check the website first before setting out for the day. Each agency will be different so do not note down each one to avoid confusion.

Models That Lead the Way

The likes of Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley are well known for voicing their opinions. Their social media account is the perfect platform to speak out and be heard.  Models like these have posed in photoshoots for fashion magazines such as Vogue as well as other popular publications like Sports Illustrated. Ashley Graham famously fronted the cover of their swimsuit issue. This is a great step yet many wish to witness a fairer representation on the catwalk at New York, Paris and London fashion week. Different body shapes should definitely be the norm rather than the latest trend. The typical supermodel is overly slim, which definitely does not reflect society.

Rejection Is a Reality

Please be aware that the world of fashion is extremely competitive. Rejection is unfortunately part and parcel of the profession. Yet a strong, confident and persistent model will continue to strive for their goal refusing to let negativity phase them. A positive mind and thinking is the way forward and the future for plus size modelling.

How to become a plus size model UK mirrors the exact same discipline, ambition and hard work that of catwalk, fitness or catalogue models. The route demands similar principles and actions of a commercial model as the competition is just as fierce and the commitments are just as demanding. Admittedly, curvaceous models have had to fight against the industry to become accepted worldwide yet since the acknowledgement and fight has gradually become easier the correct tools and platforms to succeed have been established. How to become a plus size model UK has become a realistic question by fuller figures who wish to showcase their physique within the industry.

plus-size-model-uk

There are many modelling agencies who specialise in the niche and to represent plus-size models. It is important for aspiring voluptuous models to approach many establishments in order to find an agency that is suitable to their needs. Begin by researching agencies that have built strong connections within the plus-size industry and will be able to offer these relationships to develop your career. Decide whether you would like a large, corporate company or a smaller, personal organisation depending on your needs. Remember the initial stage of finding a modelling agency is crucial to your success and therefore cannot be rushed when making an important decision. Seek advice from others who are experienced in the field and have your best interests at heart. Professional agencies, no matter how big or small will boast about their links within the industry and therefore will not be difficult to find. Their claim could be to have nurtured a connection to successful plus-size brands such as Simply Be or scouted recognised models such as Candice Huffine or Ashley Graham. It is worthwhile checking their statements for validity as unfortunately the modelling world attracts scam artists.

plus-size-model-uk

The industry demands for plus-size models to be confident within their own skin and carry a high self esteem. Although the niche has travelled far in terms of exposure and expansion there will still be hurdles to face. Some experts will be judgemental and critical of plus-size models and therefore, it is essential that individuals are realistic and do not let the jibes affect your performance. To ‘make it’ in the industry especially in this field you must be confident and self assured and not let others demoralise your ability and beauty. The niche has grown considerably due to the fact that strong, courageous personalities have faced the prejudice individuals and won! Do not take their insults personally, simply ignore the unnecessary hurtful remarks and improve from the feedback into an exceptional model.

For serious candidates who wish to enter the plus-size modelling industry it is essential that you work hard, network at every given opportunity and never give in. It is a difficult road ahead yet the success is worth it; the pride felt when witnessing yourself on the front of a magazine or gracing a campaign image for your favourite brand is an accomplishment worth celebrating.

Plus size glamour models is a desirable niche within the industry as the demand for a fuller figure is high. It is vital that individuals who fit into the category are confident in their curvaceous physique as the niche is recognised for exposing flesh. Wearing provocative lingerie and posing in a seductive way is vital to the success of plus size glamour models. A shy individual who tends to hide their figure behind oversized clothing will not be suitable for the part. It is essential that you are fully aware of the niche you are hoping to enter and the differences between the underwear and glamour industry.

Plus size glamour models

Lingerie brands such as Chantelle and Fantasy Lingerie will seek plus size models to promote their underwear designs whereas glamour modelling is used for magazines and websites for the male gender to admire. Many men find the fuller figure attractive (and rightly so) and therefore will seek images of plus size models wearing sexy lingerie and posing in a seductive way. It is therefore, worthwhile considering whether you are comfortable presenting your female form in this light and to be captured within this specialism. Once you gain a reputation within glamour modelling it is very difficult to change how professionals perceive you. If your shots are posted online or in print it is hard to remove these completely from the platform and your association linked to them. Therefore, it is vital that you are certain that glamour modelling is the niche you wish to pursue. Do not be intimidated or pressured into a decision by others, it is your personal decision on how you wish to present your body in the media.

Plus size glamour models

Body awareness and a flawless complexion are essential in the glamour modelling industry. Creating strong lines and attractive poses is vital to your success as appearing topless or wearing little clothing is a daily occurrence for successful glamour models. Eating healthily and drinking plenty of water is a great way of creating glowing healthy skin that will translate well through the camera lens. With a high exposure of skin it is vital to present a toned figure through a workout regime that enhances your frame. The aim is keep your curves as the niche requires a fuller physique but presented in a high standard. Forming a workout plan, beauty regime and a nutritious diet will show your dedication, determination and ambition to become a glamour model in the plus size sector.

Many plus size models possess confidence and a high self esteem, which has developed through the fight for acceptance within the industry. Critics can judge and state cruel remarks regarding weight and size yet plus size models have had to build a strong wall to ignore the jibes and pursue your dream. To then move into the glamour plus size industry and remove clothing is a very courageous move for individuals and only for those who are self assured and will not let the hurtful remarks affect them negatively. It is healthy for society to see fuller figures within the media to demonstrate that voluptuous figures can carve out a successful career too within the niche they wish to enter. If glamour modelling is for you then it is important to build confidence working with new people and comfortable posing nude oozing sex appeal, which does come with experience and an inner high self esteem and view of yourself.

Plus size lingerie models are required to showcase underwear for brands that cater for fuller figures. Lingerie labels are eager for professional models who possess a curvaceous silhouette to realistically demonstrate how the bra and briefs fit effortlessly. Failing to seek the correct size model will have a detrimental affect on the success of their brand as their target market will not be reached. Therefore, plus size underwear labels demand voluptuous figures to demonstrate that their lingerie is aimed at a fuller shape and reaches desired sizes of that clientele.

plus-size-lingerie-models

It is important that plus size lingerie models possess confidence in their physique. Modelling underwear demands skin exposure as the shoot will involve you wearing a well fitted bra and briefs of the designers choice for the duration of the role. Those that are shy and conscious of their figure will feel uncomfortable on the day and not deliver. Remember the client has chosen you specifically for your talent and suitability for the shoot therefore, believe in your attributes and your curves to impress your employer. By acting with confidence and self assurance you will guarantee to secure more roles with the client and earn a strong reputation that proceeds you.

To induce a confident nature look after and protect your skin. Start by consuming a healthy amount of water each day to enhance your complexion. Smooth, flawless skin will benefit your plight to become a lingerie model as rashes and spot outbreaks are certainly not favoured. Water is more beneficial to your appearance over fizzy drinks balanced with a nutritious diet. It is wise to eat healthily as again the impact on your skin and success is huge. To compliment your balanced diet ensure that you invest in a beauty regime that leaves your skin feeling smooth and sleek. Seek advice to find a high quality facial wash, cleanser, toner and moisturiser to make sure that all make up and dirt from the day Is removed. A light exfoliator and body moisturiser will leave your skin polished for those lingerie modelling shots.

plus-size-lingerie-models

A regular exercise routine is a must to keep your curvaceous figure toned and in shape. The workout is not aimed for you to loose weight yet to maintain your current size and allow for your physique to appear toned and healthy. Do not become obsessed with the need to work to a smaller size as you will have been hired for your existing shape. By maintaining a regular exercise routine you will feel confident with your voluptuous figure, which will allow for you to perform at the shoot.

For plus size models who regularly model lingerie it is important to possess a strong body awareness. It is essential that you can deliver on the day with a selection of poses that showcases the designs well. It may be wise to practice in front of a mirror to ensure that your posture is strong and your chosen positions do not look awkward or create rippling. An employee will seek a plus size model who has great poise, posture and body awareness moving in front of the camera and sea of people naturally and effortlessly.

plus-size-lingerie-models

In conclusion, lingerie plus size models are required to be confident, self assured and proud of their figure. Underwear labels will have high expectations requiring models to be comfortable exposing flesh without appearing awkward and shy. The modelling industry is fiercely competitive with many experts discriminating against plus size models therefore, employers will need to be reassured that your self esteem is high and not phased by others. Not only will it help you get an idea of the kind of work you might be able to do but you will also be able to demonstrate your understanding of poses, photographers, popular models and brands they work with when you attend castings. Insider knowledge is sure to impress and will ultimately help you become a better model in the long run.

Finding a suitable agency in your area

Not all agencies represent curvy girls so you will need to do your research and find out which do and when they are next holding castings for new faces. If there aren’t any reputable agencies close to where you live you may have to travel to a major city such as London or Manchester to increase your chances of getting regular work. Professional organisations such as UK Models can advise you on finding the right agency for your circumstances to help you get started.

Next steps…

If you think you could make it as a model you will need to invest in your future – even if you are signed by an agent. Likely costs include everything from taking exercise classes to stay in shape, buying beauty treatments and products to maintain your hair and skin, and building a set of good quality photographs to flaunt your face and your figure. UK Models can work with you to create a professional portfolio and offer advice on using it to approach agencies and casting directors.

Practice makes perfect

Be prepared to put in a lot of time practicing your model poses in front of the mirror at home if you want to perform well at castings and when working for clients. Knowing how to use your curves to create great lines and show off clothes and accessories in the most flattering way will give you the edge. Plus, it’s a great way to spend your time whilst you are waiting for the modelling jobs to start coming in.
