What is an Efolio?

An eFolio – also known as a modelling portfolio – is a great way to showcase your potential to modelling agencies and brands.

While a typical portfolio is a folder with hard-copies of printed photos, and eFolio is an online version. As most things in life become electronic, the eFolio is a great way to update your modelling portfolio, allowing you to quickly send it to prospective employees and also enables you to edit and update it with ease.

And that’s not all. The eFolio also contains your modelling credentials and other vital information like measurements and experience (think of it as like a CV for models). This information could mean the difference between landing a job and being passed over for a more experienced alternative.

Why Do I Need an eFolio?

An eFolio shows you are serious about your modelling career. This updated and modern way of showcasing your skills makes life for both yourself and for your casting agent much easier. Hard portfolios can be space-consuming and cumbersome, while the eFolio is a much slicker and more convenient way to get your details to the right people.

It’s also a great way to help you stand out from the masses. A polished, up-to-date eFolio will look very professional and help agencies and casting agents to see your potential.

Self-marketing and self-promotion are important ways to get jobs as a model. The rise of social media in particular has enabled models to use the internet to create an online presence and get themselves noticed.

An eFolio also gives you plenty of control over what people’s first impression of you as a model is. While it’s nice to have a hard-copy of your portfolio for in-person meetings, an online version is flexible enough to be sent almost immediately anywhere in the world at the click of a button.

Do I Need Modelling Experience?

The good news is – no! You don’t need any experience to create a fantastic eFolio.

This does mean that, if you do have no modelling experience, you will have less professional photos and you will therefore need to be even more careful about selecting you eFolio shots. Selfies and camera phone images won’t cut it – you need high-quality, professional photos that will stand up against shots taken by brands. With no experience, this means you’ll need to organise getting some photos taken at a professional photoshoot.

This isn’t as scary as it sounds – in fact, it’s a brilliant opportunity not only to get some amazing photos but also to get some solid experience in front of the camera and in a professional photoshoot environment. While hiring a traditional photographer is an option, a better decision is to find a studio that works specifically with modelling. This way you will get an authentic experience and have the opportunity to work with people in the industry who will be able to provide you with plenty of tips and tricks to improve your modelling.

How Do I Get Started?

Finding the right studio can be a nightmare. You want people who know what they are doing who have lots of experience in the field and who can guide you along the way.

That’s where UK Models come in. We provide a professional service for models looking for a high-quality online portfolio that they can use in the industry.

How Can UK Models Help?

UK Models has plenty of experience working with models and helping them find work in a notoriously difficult industry. Their photoshoots provide models with the whole experience of a professional shoot – including hair and make-up application by pros.

Get in contact now by filling in the form and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible to book your photoshoot.

The Layout of Your eFolio

The overall layout and presentation of your portfolio are vital to get right. Beautiful images will be lost in unattractive layouts. A format that is clear, concise and professional is the best way to showcase your images and really help them to stand out.

If your e-folio is messy or unclear, industry experts will not spend any more time perusing it. This is also why image order is important, too. You must grab their attention from the moment they see the e-folio. Don’t leave your best images to the last page, as a time-conscious viewer may not even get there if you haven’t captured their interest from the offset.

How to Maintain Your Modelling eFolio

It’s important that you keep your modelling portfolio as up-to-date as possible. This includes getting rid of outdated images and replacing them with newer ones.

Be selective about the images you show in your e-folio. It’s not about squeezing as many photos of yourself as you can into it – it’s about carefully selecting the images that most show your potential as a model and that show your range. Do not include any shots that don’t do you justice.

Think carefully about the model you wish to portray. Think about brands and images that you love and aspire to. You also need to think about your

It’s not just the images that need updating. Your model information like your name, weight, height and other measurements should all be as accurate as possible. We all fluctuate and you will likely grow a couple of inches if you started modelling young. It’s important to keep this information as correct as possible – not doing so many lose you a modelling job.

Staying Safe Online

Having an e-folio opens your world to a whole set of different opportunities. However, as with everyone who contacts you via the internet, it is important to verify information sent by any potential brands or employees to ensure they are legitimate.

A brand or agency who contacts you via or because of your e-folio will be more than happy to supply their credentials and provide proof that they are who they are. Ensure you research the person and the company by looking up their information for yourself. Don’t call numbers or write to e-mails they provide. Ensure you find the proper website and contact them via their official contact information for verification.

It’s easy to get excited and overlook this step, but it is a vital one for anyone who is contacted by someone they don’t know via the internet. Spending a short amount of time to verify brands and people will help protect you from unwanted scams and potential danger.

Model eBooks

A model eBook is like an e-folio but better. The eBook is like an online magazine and can showcase even better high-quality images than those found in an e-folio.

A freelance model is someone that works independently of an agent finding their own casting calls and work opportunities. Some hopefuls opt for a path that allows for more control of their career without the support of an agency. A route that demands a committed, dedicated character that is able to take charge of their career successfully.

There are many points to consider if you are wishing to take the freelance route over to exclusively signing with an agency. Becoming a freelance model is no easy task however; take a look at the following pointers to help you navigate the male and female modelling industry.

We can help you start your freelance career, simply register with us now!

Networking Is Vital to Your Success

You will heavily rely on your own contacts made independently. Establishing connections at fashion events such as shows, exhibitions and parties is required to get yourself noticed. Such events are filled with industry experts who are always on the look out for new talent.

Get yourself noticed. Networking can be intimidating and quite nerve-wracking depending on the event and how many people you know. Going it alone actually helps, as with a friend in toe you are less likely to talk to other people. Although hugely scary, you are more likely to make more connections independently.

Do not drink too much at these parties. Treat them as work rather than a social event as you do not want to wake up the next morning embarrassed about what you said. One glass of champagne for courage is more than acceptable but keep it to just one to avoid regretful behaviour.

Pay Your Tax

It is important to pay your tax and national insurance contributions. Declaring yourself as freelance, puts the responsibility onto yourself to ensure that you have payed the correct amount of money to the tax office. Seek advice if you are unsure how to proceed with an accountant.

Make sure you start a spreadsheet documenting all the payments you have received that month and year. Freelance modelling jobs will most likely be sporadic and irregular therefore, keeping track is essential.

A freelance models salary is not conventional with a set amount earned each year as it depends on how much work you have booked, which may not be the same every month.

Be sensible and open a savings account where you can deposit a percentage of your wage each month. When the tax bill comes around you will have enough to pay it with asking for a handout or worrying.

Model jobs will either be paid as a set day rate or an hourly rate by the brand. These are not usually negotiable as their will be lots of new models looking for modelling work who will happily take your place. However, do not let this hold you back if you believe for the pay to be unfair. Set an hourly or day rate for yourself and stick to it!

It is difficult for new models to know the standard freelance model rates. Just do your research and overtime you will get a feel for how much you should be charging. This will hopefully rise the more experienced you become.

Are You Business Minded?

Without an agent to chase up invoices and negotiate terms you will be need to be savvy. Knowledge of the modeling industry, contracts and scam artist tactics is essential to avoid being conned in a world full of dodgy characters. It is vital to keep your wits about you and act cautiously. Do not be fooled by excitement and desperation, which can easily affect your judgment considerably.

Social media is a great way to promote yourself yet when work is offered via this platform act with caution. Not many companies and agencies will offer modelling gigs via a private message on Instagram or Facebook.

You Don’t Have to Pay an Agency Commission

When signed to model agencies the company will take a percentage of your salary as a reward for the collaboration. However, freelance models will not have this obligation when finding the opportunity themselves. All your hard work will be yours to keep but make sure you save a percentage to pay your tax.

Fashion models can be offered clothes as payment yet make sure that you can pay your bills and the experience will help you find work in the future before you accept. It is tempting to say yes to everything however, ensure that it is right for you and that you know your worth.

freelance-model

Would You like an Agent?

On occasions freelance models are represented by modelling agencies or even a few different organisations. However, if you accept a job that the agent has booked or arranged you will have to pay the commission to the agency.

The amount is for their part in setting up the opportunity using their contacts and networking skills. This option may be worthwhile for aspiring models in particular as they are new to the industry.

Make sure you explain the types of modelling you are happy to do and never feel forced to pose nude or topless. Decide of the niche that you would like to excel in and approach agencies that work in this area. For example, commercial modelling covers a broad range of jobs and is a little easier to break into than high fashion.

Design a Modelling Website

To promote yourself you may wish to invest in a model website, which industry professionals will use to find new talent. Most will ask for you to pay for the privilege to have your photo and statistics on the website. Use your business mind to weigh up your options to see whether the cost is beneficial to your success.

Also, designing a freelance modelling website to showcase your talent is a great way for clients to decide if you are the right model for the job. Make sure it is professional and easy to use so that future employers are impressed on first glance. Also, online platforms especially social media is the perfect way to promote your website. However, as we mentioned be very careful when communicating via Instagram or Facebook. Make sure that the person is legit before agreeing to model for them.

freelance-model

Portfolio Costs

To showcase your talent and capabilities a modelling portfolio is required. Some agencies will cover the cost however; freelance models will certainly not have this option. Therefore, save enough money to create a high standard portfolio that can be used to secure roles. Do not scrimp on this resource, as models who are freelance will rely on quality images to promote their potential.

Keep this resource updated and relevant to your goal. Finding work as a model is tough but armed with a professional portfolio you can showcase your talent and secure those roles when you feel ready. The evidence of work will definitely put you in a good position to secure freelance model jobs. Your future employer will definitely be impressed with a modelling portfolio that has had a lot of work put into it.

Your Location

Being based in a large city in Europe or further afield is a must. London, New York or Paris are creative hubs where head offices of fashion brands are based as well as a lot of model agencies. Therefore, there will be plenty of opportunities for models to pursue.

Living right in the middle of it will not only be inspirational but also keep you current. This may result in you relocating to a new city as a long commute will be difficult on top of early starts and late finishes.

Before the big move, make sure you have enough money to pay your bills and rent. Also, food it a big one too. This might mean you saving up for a while prior to relocating to London.

Are you thinking of becoming a freelancer? If you have any more questions please get in touch by commenting below.

If you are new to modelling you may not be aware that there are a number of different types of work you can do to make a successful living in the industry. One example is catalogue modelling. Ever spent time flicking through the pages of the catalogues sent to you by your favourite brands? Then you will already be familiar with the work of a catalogue model. You may even be comparing yourself to the men and women smiling from the pages and wondering if you could do it too.

One of the great things about this profitable portion of the modelling world is that there are very few criteria. If your look, shape or size does not match the model proportions you have come to expect then don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities for people like you.

Personality counts so if you have a bubbly nature, are vivacious, friendly and easy going then you will already score high with agencies and clients alike. Quite often people working as actors will also cross over into commercial work.

Take that first step in your catalogue modelling career and register with us today!

How Do I Know If I Have Potential?

To be able to do catalogue work you will need to possess a few basic attributes:

  • Clear skin
  • Shiny hair
  • Good teeth
  • A great smile
  • A healthy, well-proportioned body
  • Bags of personality

What Kind of Work Could I Do?

There are catalogues available for just about every kind of product you could think of. Sure you will most likely spend a lot of your time modelling clothes but, depending on your age, you could also find yourself featured in catalogues for sports equipment, homewares, underwear, shoes, accessories, health and beauty products, mobility products and more. And it’s not just printed publications; your picture is also likely to be used online for corporate and retail websites too. As the online world is becoming hugely popular more catalogue brands are creating websites to reach out to their audience. Therefore, catalogue fashion models will hopefully have a lot of work coming their way.

Catalogue Modelling Jobs

Catalogues such as The Next Directory, Freemans and Littlewoods have a wide range of clothing to shoot. With a target audience aimed at the whole family it is not just female models that are hired. Separated into relevant sections catalogues cater for the husband, kids, grandma and distant relatives. Therefore, the photoshoot can steer away from fashion. Fitness models are hired to showcase gym equipment, children play with age appropriate toys and the whole family could be sat around a dining room table.

Modelling jobs are very varied requiring for models to act natural and to be extremely versatile. Remember it is a destination for parents to do the shopping for every member of the family in one place. Mums will most likely buy for their children, their husband and a few bits for herself also making shopping much easier. Therefore, modelling does have to reflect this with group shots. Child modelling is very much a part of the catalogue world.

Catalogue models are not needed for the runway at London Fashion Week yet will regularly attend photoshoots. The days can be long and exhausting as the photographer tries to shoot as many looks or products as possible. There are a lot of pages to fill. The poses will be kept to minimal, natural poses that showcase the fit of the design or how the product works. It can be difficult to be relaxed and 100% natural yet with modelling experience it will become a lot easier. Each photoshoot will most likely to be shot in a studio to keep cost down and to be in control.

What Do Agencies and Their Clients Look For?

Whilst there are no set criteria, some castings and jobs may specify a certain look, age range or clothing size. Every job is different and so modelling agencies aim to have a broad range of models on their books. For example, a petite clothing company will require models that are below a certain height in order for their clothes to fit a model well. Whereas a client seeking models for a mobility catalogue is likely to seek mature models who represent their target market. Similarly plus size models, ethnic models, child and teen models should all be suitable for certain kinds of catalogue work. Also, male modelling is a big part of the catalogue world.

catalogue-modelling

How Do I Get Started?

Depending on how you prefer to work, you can either sign with a model agency that represents models in your category or you can choose to work freelance and find your own clients. To become a model it does demand hard work Either way you will need to invest in a professional portfolio of photographs at some point. Expert organisations such as UK Models can help you create a selection photographs and offer tips on finding reputable agents.

A Catalogue Models Salary

As with all types of modelling there is no set salary. The work is flexible and is up to you or your agency to negotiate a fair price. If you accept a job found by the agency, remember that they will take a percentage of the wage. New models may get paid less than experienced models however, make sure that you are being treated fairly and are not undervalued. Larger companies do have the money to pay so make sure that you are not silenced via clothes or products. These will not pay the bills.

The modelling industry does demand for flexibility and is not a 9-5 job. Therefore, you must be sensible with your finances as you may get a large cheque, which needs to last a while. Do not go on a spending spree within the first couple of days. Make sure you save so that if the next job is in a couple of weeks you have enough money to survive. Also, make sure that you account for work that might be paid a couple of months after you have completed it. It’s about balancing and saving money.

Working as a model can be a rewarding career. Consider all of your options before deciding which kind of work is right for you.

Model advertisements regularly pop up to entice young new faces to apply. There are many things to consider. You should not apply straight away out of eagerness and desperation. Stay safe and act with caution.

Models Wanted in the UK

The United Kingdom is very attractive in the industry for a range of reasons. To you, it may have been your home for numerous years and wish for sunnier, more exotic climes. However, there are new jobs right on your doorstep that you should not dismiss so easily.

Central London is one of the fashion capitals of the world. A lot of top brands will be looking to hire people from this area, given their proximity to key events and shoots. Plus, us Londoners are often renowned for understanding fashion in a way that simply cannot be learned. So, when those at the top are asking for male and female models, they’re often actually asking for a style and natural ability, which is typically associated with England – but they’re also thinking on a practical level, too. Other large cities outside of London such as Birmingham will have opportunities for photoshoots yet not on the same scale.

Would you like to take that first in your modelling career? Simply register with us today!

models-wanted-uk

The UK is a highly diverse country with people of a range of different ethnicities, backgrounds, shapes and sizes. All fill a very different niche depending on what an agency or casting director is looking for at any one given time.

The UK has a lot of connections with other international fashion capitals, and the world’s best media, photographers, celebrities and others in the know. It’s highly connected and cosmopolitan, so you may be based at one of the modelling agencies in the UK but are asked to fly to Europe and beyond for modelling opportunities such as a location photoshoot or fashion show.

What You Need to Know…

  • Whilst the model callout can seem like an attractive concept, there are still requirements that you need to fit. The kind of agency willing to accept anyone from the UK isn’t likely to have the same kind of modelling opportunities available for its models as those who are pickier. It’s all very well and good to be a model in general, but you’re unlikely to see success for a while.
  • When you see ‘Models Wanted UK’ in an advert, do your research. Sometimes people get overly excited that their dreams might be about to come true, but unless you understand the requirements and/or what’s being promised of the modelling job, you don’t know if this is really what you’re looking for.
  • If you do make it big, being from the UK doesn’t necessarily mean anything. You’ll most likely be required to travel the world for fashion shoots. This is a highly exciting perk of the job, but remember – it’s a job. If you miss home, you can’t just hop back on a plane. There are contracts and all kinds in place, so don’t be a liability!
  • Remember that the fashion industry is very unpredictable. It is not a typical 9-5 structure. It works with flexible hours and on a part time basis. You may get more job alerts at certain time of the year and have a busy period, which may calm down. Therefore, you need to constantly be on the look out for open castings advertised by high street brands if you’re in the commercial sector.

models-wanted-uk

Are You the Right Person for the Job?

You may be super excited when you are asked to attend a casting or see a modelling job advert. However, make sure that you have all the requirements needed. It is important to balance an eagerness for the role with a sensible approach. An easy example is, if they are looking for a male model and you are female, there is literally no chance in you getting it. Make sure you read the ad. Also, if they are looking for a glamour model but you do not feel comfortable posing in this way, simply don’t feel as though you have to attend absolutely everything.

Another point to look out for is the age restriction, which will be most likely be stated on the advert or in the job title. For example, if mature models is in the description, they will be looking for a male or female model of an older generation. Teen models usually fits within the age restriction of 12-17 years old.

Of course, it is good to go to a lot of different castings for various roles within your niche to keep your options open and to gain valuable experience in auditions such as these. The best way to go about securing castings is to be signed to an agency that can use their connections to find you suitable roles. It takes the pressure off you searching for modelling jobs however; if you are successful they will take a percentage of your hourly rate for their part in getting you the job. Make sure you are signed to a trustworthy agency to ensure the castings you are invited to attend are legit. Agencies are usually looking for attractive confident models.

Don’t Trust Everything You See on the Internet

models-wanted-uk

As we’ve mentioned time and time again, models need to be wary of scam artists on the internet. Unfortunately, sometimes it is not a place of trust and predators try to prey on naïve teens who are eager to become a model. If an appealing job advert lands in your inbox or social media private messages, please be skeptical. It is extremely unlikely to be truthful and could be luring you into a trap. Becoming a model is not so easy. They are most likely trying to scam a large sum of money, get nude/topless images of you or put your in a very dangerous situation. If you do receive a message, email or comment inviting you for a model job please do the following:

The Steps to Follow….

  • Firstly, do not hide the message from your parents. Please be open and honest as acting secretively could potentially put you in a dangerous situation.
  • Remember that agencies rarely send a Facebook or Instagram message. Yes, it has become slightly more acceptable to scout models on Instagram. If the handle is from a well-known company, ring them to find out for sure. Do not use the number they provide but search for it yourself. They may be giving you a false number and pretend to be an agent.
  • Scan the text for inappropriate language such as ‘hunny’, ‘gorgeous’, ‘sexy.’ Agents and trustworthy companies will not use terminology such as these as they are much more professional .
  • Research the job in question and the company they claim to be from.
  • Never meet them or agree to the opportunity unless you are 100% certain it is legit.
  • Do not send nude pictures or undress on a video chat such as Skype. They may claim they need to see your figure but this is untrue in an attempt to trick you.
  • If you see an advert on social media stating ‘models wanted for commercial modelling’ it may not be legit. Always do thorough research as this could easily be a scam.

So it’s true, you may see model advertisements across the web and other sources. However, you can’t just walk into a dream modelling career 99% of the time. It takes a lot of dedication, common sense and caution! It is great to come up with a social media strategy that will boost your followers but please do be cautious with those that message you.

If you have worked as a model in the past or have always wanted to be a model but worry that your best years are behind you think again! These days mature models are more popular than ever as marketers wake up to the influence of ageing consumers. The grey rebellion is real as models over 60 years old are being taken seriously.

Older Female Models Fight for Their Place

Not only are there a wide range of catalogues and magazines aimed specifically at older people, but big brands and even exclusive fashion houses are opening up to the idea of using models of all ages. US clothing company American Apparel named a 62 year old model as the face and body of its lingerie campaign, and high street brands including Zara and Marks and Spencer have also worked with older models. Now well into her 80’s, Daphne Selfe is one of the world’s oldest supermodels, whilst 73 year old male couture model Charles Schumann and 69 year old Maye Musk are proving that it’s never too late to make it big.

mature-models

Successful Mature Models

It’s inspiring to see successful models grace the runway and covers of well-known magazines. With Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Dries Van Noten championing mature models, we thought we’d take a look at a few who are grabbing the fashion world with both hands.

Daphne Selfe, age 89, modelled for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair.

Jan de Villeneuve, age 72, graced the catwalk for Simone Rocha and Osman.

Maye Musk, age 70, has fronted campaigns for Swarovski and appeared on the cover of Grazia magazine and Prestige.

Frances Dunscombe, age 85, has posed in Prada for Hunger Magazine and walked in London Fashion Week.

How to Become an Older Model

Both older men and women can expect to enjoy a successful modelling career, and whilst you will need to be fit and healthy, the great news is that there is no set look for you to conform to. Agents like to see natural beauty and confidence, and that can be found in models of all ages.

In order to be considered as a mature model you will need to be:

  • Aged 35-40 years or over.
  • Have a healthy and toned body.
  • Demonstrate a vibrant personality through your poses.
  • Have good skin, don’t worry wrinkles and age spots are rarely a problem.
  • Embrace your grey hair.

mature-models

What Kind of Work Is Available?

If successful you can expect to be booked for a wide variety of work including fashion, catalogue, advertising, medical/health, editorial, character and much more. Top designers are embracing the trend and the need for the older generation to be represented. Models over 70 are no longer silenced as their silver locks and smile lines grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar alongside younger models. There is a very relevant place in the industry for ageing beauty that inspires. Many older female models take to Instagram to showcase their talent, gaining followers in there thousands. Successful mature women demonstrate how stylish and fashion forward older models can be via the platform. Many skip the casting process due to their chic posts on Instagram. Also, modelling agencies are responding to the demand signing beautiful models in their 70s.

How to Approach an Agent?

  1. UK Models will be able to advise you on reputable a older model agency in and around your local area that represent models in your particular niche. If you show the potential required to be successful they will advise you on how to contact them to see if they are accepting new models.
  2. In addition to making introductions to agencies, UK Models can help you create a collection of professional images that best showcase your look to agencies and casting directors. They understand what agencies will be looking for and, along with fashion images, can help you create naturally beautiful pictures that highlight your body shape and facial features.
  3. Be confident in your look and make the most of your attributes. If you have good skin and hair make sure it is evident in your pictures. Similarly, if your body is your best asset then dress and pose in a way that flatters it rather than detracts from it.

mature-models

Remember that there is beauty and interest to be found in a face or body that has experienced the ups and downs of life. What’s more, you will no doubt find that your age makes you more resilient to the inevitable knock backs that come with the work.

Whether you are looking to revive a previous modelling career or are hoping to make your commercial modelling debut now is the time to prove that you can look great no matter how old you are. So what are you waiting for?

Where Are All the 50 Year Olds?

Although, the silver-haired rebellion is inspirational where mature models are making ground in a previously young persons world, the 50 year olds are stuck in the middle. Many are told they are in fact not old enough to become a mature model as their hair is not grey enough and their face is not aged enough. This creates an age gap that leaves the female models over 50 years old with no place to go. The mid-lifers are being missed completely as they are ‘too young’ to be classed as a mature model but ‘too old’ to be a young model.

Also, the older models who are successful are tall and slim, which many mature women cannot identify with as we all come in different shapes and sizes. The mature model revolution has certainly made a start yet there remains a far way to go to avoid tokenism. The last thing we want is for these sassy, confident older models to be a flash in the pan. Hopefully, the concept will evolve further including more models 35 and over gracing the pages of elite magazines.

Hair models are important within the beauty industry. Products for styling and caring for hair needs to be promoted through advertising commercials, brand imagery and campaigns.

To market their unique product a male or female model who can showcase the benefits of the hairspray, shampoo or gel will be selected. Therefore, individuals who have healthy, strong hair will succeed as the product will be promoted in the correct light and ultimately persuade consumers to purchase the item from their nearest retailer. The likes of Pantene, L’Oreal, Herbal Essences and Tresemme require hair models.

Would you like to experience what it is like to become a hair model for the day? Register with us now to find out!

Hair Model Requirements

Of course, all types of hair is required for modelling jobs depending on the product in need of advertising. Creating the perfect curls, adding volume to lifeless hair or enhancing a short, grey crop requires a model to literally show the benefits through a commercial or carefully thought out image. However, typically an individual with long, flowing locks will be picked due to their versatility.

A well-conditioned, healthy head of hair can be transformed into various styles and demonstrate how the product works easily. The brand needs for consumers to feel envious of the hair on the screen and desperately want the product to create the same look. Straight hair can be curled and styled to look shorter than reality with the help of stylists who are trained in the profession.

Looking After Your Long Hair

Hair stylists will use products and heat to create the vision of the brand, which can have a damaging affect on your locks. Having your hair pulled tight into high buns with almost a full can of hairspray to hold in place, backcombed to create volume or straightened countless times will negatively effect your hair.

Even when the shoot or show does not focus on your hair, your tresses will be styled perfectly. Imagine having multiple shows each day during fashion week and the amount of product applied to change the look. Therefore, it is up to you personally to look after your locks.

It is important to take great care of your hair to ensure that it remains conditioned and healthy. Brittle, weak hair will not transfer well through the camera lens and promote the brand positively. All types of hair colours are used in the industry creating a diverse image.

9 Fantastic Hair Care Tips

  • Ensure that you remove product from your hair at your first convenience to avoid build up and damage.
  • Wash with a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type and will add either volume or control depending on whether your locks are thick or fine. It is worthwhile seeking advice from those who are trained to know which products will enhance your locks.
  • Always apply conditioner to the ends of your hair and use shampoo just for the scalp. The shampoo will run down as you wash out but doesn’t need to be rubbed in at the ends.
  • Do not wash your hair too regularly as natural oils are beneficial and excessive water will constantly remove the oils creating dry hair. 2-3 times a week is perfect. Avoid too hot water also as it can dry out your hair. Keep the water at a warm temperature.

hair-modelling

  • After washing comb your hair carefully to avoid splitting and fighting with a knot that will cause extra damage. When brushing your hair always brush from the bottom upwards.
  • Trim your hair every 6 weeks to remove split ends and present a well-maintained mane. Always go to the hair salon for a professional cut.
  • When possible let your hair air dry rather than using a hair dryer to allow a day without heat. When you do dry your hair use a cool setting and use heat protector products.
  • Dry shampoo is perfect for going that extra day without washing your hair.
  • Always seek advice from a colour expert when dying your locks to avoid damage.

Male Models Are Hair Models Too

Hair models can be both females and males as all genders are needed to promote cosmetic products. After all, men and women both buy hair products to style their hair. Again male models will be required to present a good amount of hair over a short, shaved crop as the brand will not be able to showcase the effects of their product.

In many cases wigs or extensions may be used at a photoshoot to create more volume or length depending on the brief. Therefore, in these circumstances shorter haired models can be used if the client favours your appearance over other models.

Photoshop is also a tool used to create more body and volume into a hair shot. It may be easier for employers to use advanced technology to create the desired look rather than trying to mould a hairstyle.

It is important that models are versatile when professionals are creating their new vision. Always be easy going and enthusiastic about the style as negativity will not be perceived well.

How to Become a Hair Model

hair-modelling

  • For those who wish to become a professional hair model it is wise to look after your tresses to ensure that you are repeatedly hired for new roles. Healthy, bouncy locks will always be favoured over lifeless, brittle hair. Therefore, it is important to maintain a regime that works for your hair type.
  • Ensure that you are always open minded to the hair styling created by the artist. Do not criticise the work of a professional. Your locks will be exposed to heat and hair products therefore, it is wise to take great care of your talent. Decide before you go into the profession if you mind having your hair cut.
  • As well as modelling for brands, salons such as Toni & Guy also advertise for hair models needed for competitions and practice. These might not be paid hair modelling jobs but they do provide great experience and a free haircut. Most likely they will state the type of locks they are after such as ‘long hair models wanted.’ Becoming a hair model takes dedication and persistence as looking after your tresses is very important.
  • Those with short hair will still be hired yet it might affect your opportunities. Many supermodels do have a buzz cut. However, they have established their place in the industry and are wanted for their name and social media standing. It is very different for a new model. Curly hair model jobs do exist also, so make sure you embrace your fabulous locks.
  • As with any areas of the the fashion industry there will most likely be more jobs in London. This is due to it being a vibrant, large capital city with many hair modelling opportunities available. Models with brunette, red or blonde hair have a great chance of finding work, it might be worthwhile finding a modelling agency in a large city who can help you find new jobs including walking in fashion shows.
  • Whilst getting your hair styled you will more than likely be having your face done by a makeup artist. Photoshoots and especially fashion shows are hectic with everyone working very quickly to be finished on time. There will be a lot of new faces working hard to pull the show off, with some close up in your personal space.

What Is Foot Modelling?

It is a name for individuals who use their feet to make an income. Those who possess particularly appealing feet are hired by brands to promote their product in advertising campaigns or television commercials.

Beauty labels, shoe designers and jewellery brands are simply a few companies who will turn to feet models for support. Many models also utilise other body parts such as their hands and legs to secure more modelling work and appear diverse to a company.

Take the first step to become a body part model! Register with us today to see if you have what it takes.

A Foot Models Salary

Foot modelling is not a full time occupation and will require a resourceful individual who can juggle various jobs to nurture a successful modelling career. However, a foot models income can be quite lucrative being paid a lot per shoot. Typically, body part models can get up to £500 per shoot or more depending on the brand you work for with their annual salary reaching £90,000 per year. The amount you are paid all depends on your experience, the brand hiring you, the location and the type of work required.

Body part models can earn a substantial amount of money by modelling their feet for editorial shoots and adverts. However, it is well known that there are less modelling jobs available than hand modelling and is therefore, important to add other body parts to your CV to attract more attention.

Photoshoot Tips

Whilst at a photoshoot it is vital to give 100% to the role imagining how the final product will appear and the employer’s vision. Creating the correct pose by relaxing or tensing your toes and foot will ultimately change the way the product is viewed. Practice various poses in the mirror to find attractive positions that enhance the shape of your foot and toes.

Body parts modelling may take you around the world for location shoots such as Los Angeles, New York or Tokyo. It is an exciting aspect of the job however; it is tiring with a focus on getting the winning shot. You may be rising early and getting home late. A professional photographer won’t stop until they get the shot they need.

Take Great Care of Your Asset

It is essential to take great care of your asset by manicuring your toenails, moisturising your foot and removing dry skin. Always moisturise to keep your skin soft, supple and in good condition. A strict beauty regime is a must. Avoid wearing uncomfortable shoes and socks that may leave blisters and unwanted marks.

It has been known for professional foot models to wear shoes a size too big and they never wear pointy footwear or high heels due to the harsh and negative affect on their feet. The irony is you may be modelling designer shoes at the photoshoot however; at home it’s all about the UGGs to keep those feet in good shape.

You may even get to keep the stilettos yet cannot wear them. Keep your toenails to a neutral colour as the designer may not want a bright red or vivid blue gracing their campaign. Also, bright shades can stain your nails, which results in more work for the technical team.

foot-model

More Top Tips

Do not walk outside with bare feet to avoid cuts that will spoil the shoot. They may ruin your chances of making a good impression. Fake tan is also avoidable as it can easily go wrong, which may anger the client.

For example, body part model, Nicki Donohoe wears soft cotton gloves when sunbathing on the beach to avoid getting sunspots. Also, leg models must attend the gym to tone their thighs and calves ready for modelling jobs that require only a leg shot. Many do not sit down or cross their legs for too long as this can cause varicose veins.

Believe it or not a good diet helps. A healthy diet, which avoids alcohol, caffeine, smoking and chocolate helps keep your nails strong. Being addicted to toxic substances will make you shake during those crucial moments. A nutritious diet will keep your skin soft; circulation pumping and your feet will maintain a healthy glow.

Work Those Feet

As your feet and legs are the only body part in the shot at that time it is important for your body parts to act seductively and sexy with the use of presentation and posing. You are required to create emotions through your limbs whether it is giggly, coy or ticklish.

A lot of thought goes into how to deliver your feet in a way that conveys positively through the camera. Nice long toes, a beautiful high arch, manicured nails and silky skin is the balance to perfection. It is also essential to exercise your feet to ensure that they are flexible and gorgeous.

You may be asked to position your hands and feet in an uncomfortable way to make them look natural. However, this shape for long periods of time may hurt. The next day you may have achy feet.

Do remember that the way your body looks on camera is totally different to really life. You may think your foot is beautifully arched but in the shot it looks flat. Therefore, listen carefully to direction.

Foot modelling is a serious profession used by the likes of Nivea, Dove and Pretty Polly and requires for individuals who are open to hard work and dedicated to their feet. Those who are relaxed and do not take great care of their desired body part will not survive in a competitive industry.

You may have to make little sacrifices to your daily life to accommodate your profession. For many it is the perfect opportunity to live their dream without having to put a face to the feet.

How to Become a Foot Model

If you think you have the prettiest feet on earth and your friends always comment that they could be model material, it is time to think about your options. As we’ve explained there is a career in posing with your best body part and hand modelling agencies do exist.

Your best bet would be to get some professional foot model images and send them to a body part modelling agency. Most foot modelling agencies will have an application form that you can apply to. Make sure your feet look their best to impress the agent. The same applies for a hand model and all other features that are covered in body part modelling.

Models with acne don’t exactly seem to be the most popular faces on our screens and the catwalk, but it’s amazing what a makeup artist and Photoshop can actually do. Whilst it’s of course true to say that models with spots aren’t the norm, they do very much exist.

The fashion industry is a young persons world. Therefore, it is almost guaranteed that teens and those in their early twenties will have spots or severe acne. However, the modelling world is not open to showcasing the common skin condition that millions suffer with daily causing low self esteem. Covered with make-up or digitally removed, spots are no where in sight creating an unrealistic illusion.

Don’t let spots hold you back! Register today and start your modelling career today!

Kadeeja Khan’s Story

Recently, 21 year old beauty blogger, Kadeeja Khan was cut from a L’Oreal shoot due to her acne. The global cosmetic brand approached Kadeeja to ask her if she would like to visit Paris for their launch of their new vegan hair dye. However, they soon retracted their invitation via email stating that they can’t be involved with people with skin issues. Appalled, hurt and humiliated by their unkind remarks, Kadeeja shared their opinion with her 129,000 followers.

She states: “To think we’re supposed to live in an advanced society that not only ACCEPTS of ALL walks of live but actually embraces people of all backgrounds, religions, ethnicities and disabilities. Shame on you L’Oreal.”

L’Oreal did issue an apology stating that they do in fact work with both women and men with all skin types and celebrate beauty in all its diversity. However, we are curious to know if they did or will ever employ models that have acne. With the fashion industry becoming much more diverse it would be inspiring for beauty brands to tackle issues that a lot of people suffer with. Spots being one of them. So many are self conscious, embarrassed and upset with their not so flawless skin. Beauty brands therefore have a responsibility to show that it is a common problem that can be helped with the right products. Also, if different skin types are represented by cosmetic labels their confidence will soar.

Looking After Your Skin

Whilst some things can’t be helped, it’s important to note that looking after your skin is one of the most important things you can do when you’re a person who will be appearing in the public eye and doing the exact kind of work that modelling requires. For example, you must drink lots of water. Ensure that you’re getting in two litres or more every single day.

models-with-acne

Diet

The things you eat can really help as well. If you eat a diet rich in grease, this is much more likely to make you break out. Fresh fruit and vegetables are fantastic for keeping your skin in the best possible shape. What you directly put into your body effects your skin, wellbeing and personality. It is so closely linked that models should consider their diet carefully without becoming obsessed. Choose an apple over a chocolate bar the majority of the time.

Skincare Regime

You can also keep up a great skincare routine! It’s important to remove make-up after you wear it, particularly the heavy stuff that you might wear for modelling jobs. Then you should use a moisturiser to keep it as hydrated and smooth as possible. Now and again it might be worthwhile trying a face mask too. Obviously, you need to make sure that you’re not using products that will further irritate the skin – unperfumed products are great, as they’re a lot less harsh. Simple things like regularly washing your hair (but not enough to dry out the skin) can really help – greasy fringes, for example, can cause spots.

Unfortunately, you may never have clear skin with adult acne being a real problem for some people however, a regime that works for you will help. On days where you have no modelling jobs allow for your skin to breathe by going makeup-free.

Stress

Stress is another cause of outbreaks. The more stressed you are, the more spots will appear. This is due to how stress causes your body to make hormones like cortisol, which tells the glands in your skin to make more oil. As we all know oily skin causes spots and ‘bad skin’. If you feel that you are feeling burnt out and stressed, make sure that you rest and find a way to feel calm. Your skin will respond.

Travel

The fashion industry works on a global scale, which involves a lot of travel. You may be working in Los Angeles, California or an Australian city or both in the space of a couple of weeks. Feeling tired and run down from all the travelling may result in a spotty complexion. Therefore, make sure you keep up with the your beauty regime, drink plenty of water and sleep as much as you can.

Models with Severe Cases

Models with acne have often tried everything they can in order to improve the condition of their skin. Sometimes it can be extremely difficult and the challenge is frustrating to say the least. However, with the help of a doctor and specially medicated products, there is hope out there.

Acne treatments will really help clear your skin, which in turn will improve your mental health. Many with severe cases can feel very negatively about themselves. Therefore, it is worthwhile speaking to a professional. Cystic acne can leave models with scars. This may be another factor that causes insecurity however, do remember that small acne scars make you who you are. Every detail of your face is unique and beautiful.

models-with-acne

Is Social Media to Blame?

With filters and apps so easily available, social media posts rarely show flaws. The likes of Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner look flawless in every way, only showing an edited version of themselves. Posing on the red carpet or working at New York or London Fashion Week there’s hardly a spot in sight. This provides an unrealistic version for young people to see on a daily basis, which causes low self esteem if their complexion doesn’t match insta-models. Try not to compare yourself to a highly edited image.

When Moto Guo Sent Models with Spots down the Runway

Back in 2016, Malaysian designer, Moto Guo made a statement at Milan Men’s Fashion Week. His choice to not use traditional makeup artist techniques by covering the models face in foundation caused a stir. Yes, the models graced the runway with their natural blemishes for everyone to see. Only MAC mahogany lip liner and MAC coffee eye pencil were the only two products used for the fashion show. His bold move was to showcase a skin condition that millions of people struggle with and certainly relate to. It is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. However, it doesn’t seem like the idea has caught on.

Do you suffer from spots? Would you be shocked to see models with acne? Let us know.

For most jobs you are required to be aged 16 or over. If you are looking for summer jobs during the school holidays or work to compliment modelling opportunities there are many job types that 15 and 14 year olds can do to earn money before your sixteenth birthday. Take a look at the types of jobs available and what to expect.

Would you like to become a teen model? We can help, simply register with us today!

Jobs for 15 Year Olds in the UK

Young people are able to take on a paper round, be a kitchen porter, dog walker or babysit for family friends. The latter is more lucrative and can be easy to take on during term time.

Make sure that you are paid fairly as many try to exploit teens and pay below the national minimum wage. This is due to the fact that 15 year olds are not actually entitled to the national minimum wage. Therefore, you have to negotiate with your employer for a fair amount. Those aged between 16-17 are entitled to at least £4.20. This is a figure that you could start your negotiations with. You need to have realistic salary expectations for your age yet not be taken advantage of also.

Approach your local newsagents to see if they have a paper round available. Alternatively, ask your family friends if they need someone reliable to look after their kids or walk their dogs. Of course, if you offer dog walking services you must be a lover of animals.

Work experience is very valuable and can help in many aspects of your life. Voluntary work is also beneficial when it comes to finding part time work for 16 year olds. You will already have work experience that other young workers don’t have. Local businesses will value a conscientious, hard working young person who has took time to do some voluntary work.

Working Around School Commitments

There are also laws on how many hours a week you can work. So make sure you do not over do it. 15 year olds can work up to 2 hours on a school day and a Sunday. Saturdays are slightly different and you can work up to 8 hours. However, during school holidays you can complete up to 8 hours of work each day accept Sunday, which remains at only 2 hours.

Make sure that you are receiving regular breaks throughout the day. Also, it is important to start and finish at appropriate times. 15 year olds should never start before 7am or finish after 7pm by law or work during school hours.

Baby-sitting is a job that can easily be planned around modelling opportunities and school. You will most likely be asked at weekend evenings. This bit of pocket money can be saved and put towards your portfolio to show your parents you are serious about the job opportunities. Those under school leaving age are restricted by law yet can take on some jobs in retail and catering industries. The best way is to ask first before applying what their minimum age is.

how-to-find-jobs-for-15-year-olds

Jobs for 15 year olds UK is a search that a teenage model will perform to uncover the types of job roles available for their age range. At the age of 15, an individual is classed as a teen model until they reach over 17. Therefore, parent’s consent and a teen model agency are essential in forming a successful career and securing exciting job roles. Without these two parties models of this age range would find the task of breaking into the modelling industry extremely difficult. A simple ‘jobs for 15 year olds’ search will not suffice.

List of Model Jobs for 15 Year Olds

Brands such as New Look, H&M and Marks & Spencer all require campaign images to showcase their designs for advertising in and out of store. Teen models have a big part to play in promoting brands and their products.

  • Campaign shots – every store organises ads to promote their new season campaign.
  • Product imagery – each brand has a website that includes simple images to showcase the fit of the design.
  • Catalogue work – catalogues also use product shots to showcase clothing. With the large amount of products available teens may be asked to pose using a technical gadget for example.
  • Fashion shows – shopping malls use teens in their event to showcase their designs suited to their age range. Top fashion designers also include teens in their shows.
  • TV commercials – brands use commercials to promote their designs to a larger audience.

Teenage Model Agencies

Those employed to organise shots for the teenage department will turn to trusted modelling agencies who specialise in this age range; choosing organisations that have been recommended or used previously forming a strong bond.

The agents will note down the specifications that the brand desires and search through their teenage model database to source individuals that fit the description. The chosen selection will be contacted to meet the organisers and establish availability. Teen models will attend a casting where the preferred models are chosen to attend the shoot. With this lengthy process in mind it is essential to be signed to a reputable agency that will provide opportunities via their links and connections within the industry. Also, make sure that you discuss pay and expenses before signing the contract. You may end up with very little money otherwise as there are many who exploit teens in the industry.

London is the hub of the modelling industry and where most agencies and brands are located. If you don’t live near London expect a long commute or an overnight stay to get to castings and job opportunities. As the modelling world is constantly on the move, new jobs present themselves very regularly. Living in Wales, Scotland or other English cities could present a problem as you have your school timetable to consider. Your parents and the local council need to be on board if you take a day off to model.

how-to-find-jobs-for-15-year-olds

Where to Find Modelling Opportunities

Some smaller, independent jobs for local fashion shows or brands may advertise for a teen model on free sites such as Indeed or Gumtree. If you choose to investigate further it is essential that you remain safe at all times. Do not meet up with a stranger without knowing exactly who they work for and if they are legit. Ask as many questions as possible to find out more, check their website to truly see whether the facts match up and ask for a second opinion.

Always take a friend or family member with you for safety reasons and meet in a public place such as a cafe where there are others around. Let adults know where you are meeting so many people know of your whereabouts without alarming them. These useful sites can offer opportunities that are legit yet it is necessary to act with caution to ensure safety.

Do not overwork yourself with super long days as exhaustion is a reality that can be really serious. A recent case of a teen working abroad tragically died due to extra long hours. Her young age left her scared to go to hospital in a foreign country not speaking the language or having medical insurance. Always make sure your parent is with you to take care of you on each job opportunity. They provide a voice to an inexperienced, naïve teen who do not know the ways of the world yet.

Modelling Jobs to Avoid

Avoid modelling jobs that do not ask your age or for permission from your parents. At the age of 15, you may feel mature and wise enough to make your own decisions yet the experience of your parents wiser years will be useful. In comparison to industry experts and your parents life experience your young years may make you naive and innocent. It is normal to want to make your career choices yet the boundaries are put in place for a reason.

Teenagers are still experiencing life and need older individuals to guide and give permission to keep hopeful adolescents safe. The excitement and desperation to make it as a model may outshine reality. Therefore, having an adult making rational decisions is a blessing. Do not except jobs via social media as no matter how fascinating and exciting they seem it is usually a predator using the wrong methods to find innocent teens. Trustworthy agencies and brands will not use social media platforms to connect with young individuals.

What Does a Model Scout Do?

Model scouts seek talent to hopefully launch as the new top model on the scene. For young, aspiring models it is important to be aware and informed to distinguish the trustworthy from the unreliable.

Where Do They Look?

They usually lurk at busy places and events that attract a young audience. It is a time where experts who are hired by large modelling agencies can scan the crowd to find potential. Festivals, shopping malls and apparently fast food chains such as McDonalds prove that teenagers and young adults gravitate towards these places.

It is the perfect opportunity to evaluate a large crowd rather than waiting in a quiet area. Typically, the talent are not aware of their potential to model or are caught off guard whilst enjoying the festival or shopping experience.

Scouts on Instagram

Living in a digital obsessed world, scouts do turn to social media to find new faces. In particular, Instagram is very visual with Instagram modelling become a big thing in the industry. An Instagram model search will be successful for some agents without having to leave the comfort of the office.

Do be wary when replying to messages and comments as a lot of scam artists hide behind a screen. Make sure that you check if a company or individual is legit before agreeing to meet. If someone is claiming to be from a large agency or company, a quick phone call will determine if they are telling the truth. On a positive note, it gives aspiring models the opportunity to be noticed worldwide. Check out the latest hashtags to ensure that agents are aware of your profile.

How to Know If the Opportunity is Legit

When approached by a model scout whilst at a music festival or shopping at your favourite high street store such as TopshopZara or Urban Outfitters keep your wits about you to assess whether the opportunity is genuine. A reputable scout will carry a business card with an address, phone number and email contact printed clearly on the marketing tool.

Once home research the company to check if their facts are correct and their reputation within the industry. This task should be easy to complete as a modelling agency will have a website to evaluate. An easy way to spot a fraud is to ring the number to see if it actually a legit company. Be wary if the scout asks for money upfront or for you to leave with them immediately. Always be polite, thank them for their interest and proceed to find out more before agreeing to meet them in person to be thorough and sensible. If under 18, always make sure that you check with your parents. They will be able to help you understand if the scout is trustworthy.

What Modelling Scouts Look For?

Professionals scouting for models will usually seek individuals aged between 14 – 21 with healthy skin, physique and hair as a base. The winning formula will be a young person who stands out in a large crowd with an unusual face, a charismatic personality or an inspirational aura. A great bone structure, being photogenic and a natural charm will go far. Candidates of this calibre are easy to stop as their infectious nature draws people in – a muse if you like.

How to Impress

Scouts are looking to see young talent in real life. Whether you are shopping, dancing in the crowd at a festival or sunbathing, individuals are unaware of scouts looking for potential. Young individuals in these situations will not be worrying if their make-up is perfect or their outfit is super stylish. They will be going about their life as normal. Therefore, to impress you just have to go about your everyday life as you would. Don’t overthink it!

For example, Amy Maggs was spotted at a One Direction concert in Manchester and Saska Ingham was shopping in Oxford Circus eating a waffle on a school trip when she was discovered, whilst Tatum Marchetti was scouted at an event at the O2 arena. Also, Kate Moss was found in the airport and Jourdan Dunn was shopping in Primark. The fashion world works on a global scale all around the world in big cities such as London, Paris and New York. You never know when the opportunity will arrive if at all so do not hang around these areas. Go about your everyday life actively working towards becoming a model. If you are spotted then this is a huge bonus.

How to Get Discovered by a Modelling Agency

It is important to not wait for the opportunity to come to you by attending every music festival and shopping daily – difficult to resist I know!!! Submitting applications online to various modelling agencies of your choice is another way of getting noticed by modelling scouts. Also, modelling agencies host open calls to meet lots of potential models.

After being spotted by experts you will be invited to attend a model agency for a meeting. They usually take it slow and steady by explaining how the business works. A plan and next steps will be discussed including your availability over the next six months. Remember whilst in high school modelling is just a hobby. At this point photographs will be taken of you by the agency to begin your career as hopefully a successful model.

This is an exciting time for aspiring models yet there will be a lot of hard work involved in shaping a modelling career as this is the starting point. A reputable modelling agency will provide training and advice for those who have never worked in the field previously. It is important to be confident, friendly and positive when starting out and learn from those more experienced than you. Absorb as much information as possible to survive in a competitive industry. As you gradually secure more roles you will gain more experience and confidence to build a modelling career that you will be proud of. Start conversations, be interesting and engaging as there is much more to being a male or female model than good looks. Finally, personality is key as the model scouts like genuine individuals who see modelling as a creative outlet.
